Rather than going in a more action direction, this mod tries to keep the game as a survival horror, but remove elements that I found frustrating.
Instead of horror coming from a shotgun that only works at melee range and being largely unable to see during combat, instead the tension will come from dwindling resources.
The shotgun is now much more in line with the one found in Doom 1 and 2, with a different model included to indicate to the player that this is not the Doom 3 shotgun you are used to. The shotgun has far less spread with the trade off of having the most reduced ammo supply in the game, you will have to save it for when you need it.
All other ammo in the game is halved, this means that the player will have to engage with the games mechanics more than before, searching for resources, listening to voice logs for info, strategizing which weapon to use for which scenario, getting the most out of each weapon including the flashlight, chainsaw and grenades. - For example playing this forced to me learn that you can actually dodge the tentacle commando by crouching, leaving him open to being chainsawed.
The difficulty drops off somewhat in the final act after getting your hands of the Soul Cube, this section of the game also features much more ammo. I see this as somewhat of a victory lap after going through some of the much tougher sections leading up to it, and you could consider it to be the transition of the marine into what we see in all other Doom titles, where this game would act as a kind of origin story.
Description - Resurrection of Evil:
Here things are a little different due to the player being significantly more powerful than at the start of the main game. In addition to the changes above, we have,
The pump shotgun is different yet again, this time it uses the vanilla skin to let the player know that they're in for an awful time. The spread is reduced, but the damage is now just under half, meaning it should struggle to one-hit lower level demons. Clip size is also reduced to 4.
For the super shotgun to be justified in this world of much less ammo, it has had a small change. The SSG now has the same spread as the one in Doom 2, making it a bit more accurate.
The duration of Helltime as well as Berserk and Invulnerability from The Artifact has been cut from 15s to 6s. Now you are unlikely to clear a room with a single use of The Artifact, with it instead acting as a more frantic effect for single target use.
Description - The Lost Mission:
The lost mission features the same Pump Shotgun and Super Shotgun as seen in R.O.E. with a bit more ammo upon picking up the SSG. Compatible port of the expansion can be found here.
Differences - Main Game:
- Duct Tape Mod - flashlight on all guns.
- Pump Shotgun spread reduced from 22 to 5 (the same value that NPC shotguns use).
- Pump Shotgun now reloads 1 shell at a time instead of 2.
- Included Alpha Pump Shotgun model to base game.
- Half ammo rounded down for all weapons (with under half for the shotgun/BFG for balance).
- HD Widescreen HUD from Sikkmod, with vanilla mouse cursor, for alternative aspect ratio download Sikkmod by Sikkpin.
- Sound effects fixes for use with Dhewm 3, and vanilla pistol sound restored.
- ReShade settings: FXAA + Adaptive Sharpen.
- FOV set to 100.
Differences - Resurrection of Evil:
- R.O.E. Pump Shotgun still has reduced spread, but now does under half damage (88) as well as half capacity (4).
- R.O.E. Pump Shotgun uses vanilla pump shotgun model to indicate difference with the one in the main game.
- Super Shotgun has spread improved to the same amount seen in Doom 2.
- Fix for Super Shotgun sound being too quiet, using sound effect from another mod listed below.
- Fix for mismatched Pistol model when using HD Pack with either DLC.
- Reduced buff duration from The Artifact from 15s to 6s.
Differences - The Lost Mission:
- Compatible port of expansion can be found here.
- Same changes to both shotguns as R.O.E.
