Morrowind May Modathon and Skywind

  • Comment
The time of year is once again upon us and we have two different anniversaries to celebrate this time. Today marks 22 years since the release of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind as well as the 10th annual Morrowind May Modathon and, just like last year there will also be a development update for Skywind.

Skywind Development Update

Skywind, as many of you may know, is the ambitious modding project that aims to modernise Morrowind by recreating the game in the engine of Skyrim: Special Edition. We've covered the projects in articles in 2023 and 2020 and again this year, the team behind it are releasing a development video update that you can check out below. The video is set to release today May 1st at 16:55 BST.

For more on Skywind and it's team, check out tesrskywind.com.

Morrowind May Modathon 2024

In case you’re a new modder, the May Modathon is an annual event of modding creativity and sharing between the modders of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Over 150 mods were uploaded last year and we look forward to seeing what you come up with. This year marks the 10 year anniversary of this event and its continued success is a testament to the loyalty of this modding community as well as the dedication of the hosts of this event, darkelfguy and Danae123

On that note, here is a short message from the event hosts:

“Twenty-two years ago, on May 1st, Morrowind was released to an eager gaming and modding public, and what was at first a strange and alien land has become a home, a place we long to return to, a world we visit again and again, and though decades pass, we always come back.

But Morrowind isn't a static world, for modders have been building upon it, expanding it, improving it, reimagining it for 22 years, adding new adventures, new experiences, new lands to explore, new mechanics and new graphics, and so much more! After 22 years, not only does Morrowind still have an active modding community, but the Morrowind modding community has grown and expanded, and is now more active than ever, releasing over a thousand new mods every year!

And on this special anniversary, what better way is there to celebrate Morrowind's 22nd birthday than to continue to build upon it? As such, once again this year, we're hosting the 2024 Morrowind May Modathon Month Modding Competition, the tenth annual Modathon for the Morrowind Modding Community!

For the last 10 years, the Morrowind Modathons have served as an annual celebration for both Morrowind's anniversary and the modding community's creativity, celebrated every May 1st and lasting throughout the entire month of May! And this year, we're excited to announce, once again, that the Morrowind May Modathon Month is back for 2024, celebrating 22 years of Morrowind!

From May 1st through to June 2nd, modders can submit mods, earn achievement badges, and win prizes by using the May Modathon 2024 tag and the Morrowind Modathon 2024 header in their mod description! We have an exciting array of 94 achievement badges for modders to unlock with their mods, with achievements for competing in weekly themed challenges, category achievements, metric achievements, bronze, silver and gold achievements, and 27 hidden achievements - how many can you find? For a full list, check out our announcement thread over on the forums!

Over the last 10 years, 1300+ mods have been released for the annual Morrowind Modathon Month modding competitions, and with your help, we can add even more to that impressive tally, making this amazing game bigger and better than ever!

There is no better way to celebrate Morrowind's anniversary than building and releasing mods, and whether you're a modding veteran or a newbie just starting out with using the Construction Set, I hope you'll join us for the 2024 Morrowind May Modathon!

Participation is simple, any Morrowind mod released in May can be entered into the competition, just remember to include a tagline "Part of the May Modathon Month" (or the Morrowind Modathon 2024 header) near the top of your mod's description, or use the Modathon 2024 tag to enter your mod as part of the competition. You'll be automatically entered to potentially win one of our weekly random-drawing prizes, and of course, unlock achievements!

For more information, including rules, links to tutorials for first-time modders, and a complete list of achievements, check out our official announcement thread here on the Nexus forums or stop by our Discord channel!

As I always say, the best games never die! Happy modding and long live the Morrowind Modding Community!”

A massive thank you to both Danae and darkelfguy for their amazing work year after year and a big congratulation for the incredible achievement of running this for 10 years.

Are you excited for the release of Skywind and seeing what the Modathon brings? Let us know in the comments.

Just curious, will the player has to own Morrowind as well for this to work just like with Skyblivion where the player need to own Oblivion?

Yes, you'll need both, they cannot give you assets from a game you don't own.

I don't think they actually use any asset from morrowind, i don't think morrowind assets are even compatible with skyrim se engine, but i haven't followed much more with the latest news with skywind, i think they are making their own assets instead of porting them though, i'm pretty sure skyblivion also is making their own assets... Having Morrowind in a library(gog/steam or whatever) though is NEVER a mistake, that game is still awesome.

Morrowind only needs 2GB of SSD space. The textures for Sarah Morgan´s leather jacket need more...

Will it be added to steam as a separate game like enderal forgotten stories, if so, it would be very nice. Or will it be played with game modding?

Truth, based on size you'd think Starfield was ESO.

Yes, to use REDkit or any other modding tool that involves modifying game content, players generally need to own the base game. This is similar to projects like Skyblivion, where players need to own the original Oblivion game.

Time to go to the attic and find back my Morrowind's CD's. Oh, wait... my computer doesn't have a CD reader.

Buy it on Steam when it's on sale. It's like $10 max.

ngl I envy (in a good way) MW modding scene for having such dedicated core community, and individuals who every single year work hard to make Modathon happen. Good stuff!

@frogstat it is, but in a different way. We don't have the "people's people" who would be able to rally everyone around an idea like a Modathon, and then work hard to make that into reality. We tried, but almost everyone with skills to kickstart it - had no extra free time left for it xD
