The newly established State Rail Authority of NSW and been formed in 1981 superseding the former NSWR, they wanted a new image mainly brought on by the success of the visual impact that the XPT had on the public, the SRA wanted something similar of all their trains. In late 1981, the SRA appointed ‘Phil Belbin’ to the project of designing this new image, under the direction of the Chief Executive ‘David Hill’ & the chief mechanical engineer ‘John Brew’, work commenced on designing and ironing out a new livery with a good visibility safety level. Finally, after 120 colour concepts were prepared and narrowed down to the chosen livery, known as the Candy livery (or other names Belbin or lollipop) The scheme was an all-over red body with a thin yellow stripe atop a thicker orange stripe atop a White stripe, with black under gear, and initially a silver roof (later grey, white, then all over red depending on the class).
