About this mod

Adds the Norfolk and Western Hooter single-tone whistle to the SH282.

Requirements
Permissions and credits
Norfolk and Western made extensive use of single-note "hooter" whistles, perhaps most famously on the Y6b Mallets. Now your SH282 can be retrofitted with one such whistle.

Installation:
  • Install ZSounds.
  • Navigate to your Derail Valley install directory (inside the steamapps folder, usually).
  • Select the "Mods" folder, and then select the "ZSounds" folder.
  • Extract the folder inside this file to the Mods/Zsounds directory you just opened.
  • Congratulations! You're technically done. The Hooter whistle will be added to the random pool of whistle sounds ZSounds can apply to the SH282s of the Valley.
  • Optional: If you want a specific 282 to have this whistle, step onboard the locomotive, and open the console. Enter zsounds.applysound N&W_Hooter
and press enter. And that's it!

A couple of notes:
  • A Y6b operates at 300 psi boiler pressure. With Zeibach's Steamer Overhaul, the 282 operates more in the 200-240 psi range. For that reason (and also because it was the cleanest audio sample I could find) the whistle is of a lower pitch than you'd hear on a Y6b. It still sounds nice, though. I also have a file adjusted for the Y6b's higher pitch, if you want that instead. That one's called N&W_Y6b instead of N&W_Hooter, so you could even have them both installed if you wanted.
  • Because of the way DV models whistle sounds, it's unfortunately not possible (to my knowledge) to replicate some of the finer points of the hooter, most notably its tendency to make squeaks and chirps at the beginning and end of the whistle sound. Sorry, nothing I can do about that.
Aside from that, hope y'all enjoy! Happy hooting!
