This looks pretty cool actually, I'm all for the Maiden on a shield! However, have you done the bump map for it as well? The used wear/tear look seems flat compared to the border of the shield. May want to do that as well. nVidia Tools for Photoshop works well, if you don't use Photoshop than CrazyBump is a good shareware alternative. It is a 30 day trial, no watermarks or anything, believe it does bump (normal maps), diffuse, and spec. I found it earlier for someone else.
One thing I noticed off the bat with CrazyBump is it lets you do dynamic normal maps similar to Maya and Cinema4D and such, making them able to stand out a lot better. .
thanks for the tips. I will look into the BumpMap-Thing. I use GIMP and Paint.net. GIMP seems to have BumpMap but i will take a look at CrazyBump as well. SOON !!! - Again, THANK YOU and have a good time!!!
Best to use a normal map you make, but only mask in the areas you need bumped, and leave the original shield trim to not mess up the borders of the bump wrap.
