(I'm not a good pixel artist, forgive me and/or make prettier ones please)
Pretty straightforward, this mod adds kites to the game! Yes, those flimsy things on a string you let flap in the air. There's no wind by default in Daggerfall's weather management systems (that I found at least) so I simulate it. If there are other mods out there that add wind, that shouldn't interfere with this.
What's In This Mod?
- Adds a new type of item to the game: Kites
- 9 Kites are included: 3 Generic (Red, Blue and Green), 3 Regional (Sentinel, Wayrest and Daggerfall) and 3 mob loot drops
Do Kites...Do Anything?
- What, like, beyond being delightful contraptions that catch the wind and soothe the soul? Sure, I guess.
- If you move forward towards your kite, the kite descends from the sky
- If you move backward away from your kite, the kite climbs higher (even higher if you run!)
- Kites change their behavior a bit based on the current weather.
- If you're flying a kite and you jump from some height, you get a free slowfalling effect
- You can press and hold the 'K' button to reel your kite in a bit.
- Click on the kite when it's near you to put it away. (this can be finicky, sorry)
- Every time you finish flying your kite, the total time you've spent flying kites is tracked and displayed.
- ...and they have collision (with the player, not other stuff atm) and are attached to the player, leading to FUN*
How Does it Work?
- You acquire new kite items from shops and mob loot drops
- Go into your inventory, select USE and then select the kite you wish to fly. Must be outdoors!
- There is a 25% chance that any of the Red, Blue or Green generic kites will be available at any General Store or Pawn Shop
- Regional Kites are always sold by General Stores or Pawn Shops in their respective regions: Daggerfall, Sentinel and Wayrest
- Mob Drop Kites are a 5% drop from the following enemies: (Harpy, Dreugh, Daedra Lord)
Do I Need Other Mods?
- Nope!
Compatibility w/Other Mods
- I've personally tested with several other mods and have had no issues, but YMMV (feel free to post bugs)
...Why?
- I wanted to fly my kite irl last weekend but there wasn't any wind. Now I can fly whenever I want. Don't look at me like that.
- Once I started I used this to learn how to work with a ton of DFU systems, so this was an amazing learning project!
- What I've learned from this mod will help me refactor and improve my other mods.
Future Plans
- More Kites!
- Specifically, kites for regions, enemies, existing banners/art, elder scrolls memes
- Completely dependent on when I feel like making art. If you want to contribute art for a kite, I'll need a png with 4 frames of the kite (I'm using 220x520 for each frame) and a 64x64 item icon.
- Android version not currently planned (but will revisit when I have time)
Credits and Kudos
- magicono43's Jewelry Additions and Grimore-of-Spells repos for helping me understand how to add items and spells to the game.
- Ember's offhand comment about turning Daggerfall into a flight sim which got me to think about kites. Also, I want DaggerFlight now.
- Regnier for the idea to have a kite give you something in a specific circumstance :)
* I'll be honest, most of the fun I've had so far has been clipping out of bounds, passing through walls, and trying to master the fine art of Kitesurfing. Yes, I built this originally so I could enjoy looking at a kite in the air, but if you just want to mess around breaking physics and falling through the ground 30 times before finally pulling off that perfect ascent over the palace in a rainstorm, then this may be the mod for you. I have no intention of fixing any of that.
