INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
*******************************

How to install the 2021 EXPANSION:
------------------------------------

1.) FIRST YOU NEED TO UNZIP THIS FOLDER (2021 EXPANSION v9.3 - installation files.zip), so the files inside are ready to use:
Right-click the folder and select "Unpack all...". You should now have an additional, normal folder with the same name,
but without the ".zip" extension. You don't need the ".zip" folder that you downloaded anymore, and can safely delete it
if you want.

2.) IF YOU HAVE THE STEAM VERSION OF CIV 3, YOU NEED TO REPLACE A FILE (if you have ANY other version, skip this step!):
Copy the file "LABELS.TXT" inside the folder: "STEAM VERSION ONLY, open the folder and copy the file inside!"
Then exit the folder, and open the folder: \2021 EXPANSION v9.3 - installation files\.2021 EXPANSION\Text\
You should see a file with the same name inside (LABELS.TXT). Replace it by pasting the Steam file in that folder and
overwriting the standard version. Make sure you do this correctly, or the text labels in the game will be messed up.

3.) NEXT STEP IS TO INSTALL THE MAIN MOD FILES INTO THE GAME'S SCENARIO FOLDER:
Go back to the main installation folder (2021 EXPANSION v9.3 - installation files). Copy the folder called
".2021 EXPANSION" and the file called ".2021 EXPANSION.biq" from here. Next, you need to locate the folder on your
computer where Civ 3 is installed, and paste the files you copied into the "\Conquests\Scenarios\" folder inside your
main Civ 3 folder. If you are updating an older version of this mod, you can just overwrite the old files and it will
work fine.

4.) FINALLY YOU NEED TO INSTALL C3X (a separate mod that fixes many bugs and provides additional capabilities to the game):
Go back to the main installation folder (2021 EXPANSION v9.3 - installation files). Copy the folder inside
called "C3X_R21". Then navigate to the \Conquests\ folder inside the main Civ 3 folder on your harddisk. You are in
the right folder if you can see the file "Civ3Conquests.exe". Paste the C3X_R21 folder there, then open the folder.
Double-click the file "INSTALL.bat" to install C3X (you might get a generic blue warning screen from Windows, in that
case press "Show more details" then "Run" to proceed). A pop-up message from C3X will confirm if the installation was
a success.

5.) The installation is now complete! To play, run Civ 3 normally. You will find the 2021 EXPANSION under the "Civ-Content"
category in the Main Menu. It will be on top of the list.

Additional info:
-----------------------------------

A.) When you play this expansion, please make sure you keep the option labelled "PLEASE KEEP THIS OPTION TURNED OFF!"
unchecked (=off). It is the last option on the list in the 2nd screen when you set up a new game. Otherwise it might
occasionally mess up Leaders, and there is no other way to remove it.

B.) The C3X mod (a mod integrated with the 2021 EXPANSION) makes units move at the same pace on railroads as they would
on roads. If you feel it is too slow, just go to the Preferences menu and turn off "Animate our Automatic Moves".
You might want to do the same with "Animate Friend Moves", too. This could save several minutes each turn on larger maps.

C.) The manual for the expansion is called "2021 EXPANSION - Manual.pdf" and is located inside this folder, plus a copy
inside the scenario folder (".2021 EXPANSION"). It contains complete charts and statistics for the mod.

D.) To make full use of a larger widescreen monitor and see more of the map, you might want to try this "hack":
Find the file "conquests.ini" , it is located within your \Conquests\ folder. Open the
file by double-clicking it or using a basic text editor (like Windows NotePad). Add the line "KeepRes=1"
(without the brackets) to the end of the file (last line). Save, and try it out. The entire game (not just this expansion)
will now run in your standard Windows desktop resolution rather than the game's original resolution.
You could add the line "PlayIntro=0" too, to remove the intro video for a faster startup.

E.) If you use the "KeepRes=1" hack mentioned, beware of using the mouse to click on the buttons to close the various screens
when the game ends. It might crash (hang) the game and prevent you from finishing completely if you misclick even the
slightest. To be safe, use the Escape key on you keyboard to progress instead, this never crashes the game.

F.) There's a red icon for the expansion included if you want to use it (2021 EXPANSION.ico).

NOW YOU ARE READY TO PLAY, ENJOY THE MOD!
