Sorry to say but vikings did not wear lamellar. Some could have gotten it from working for the byzantines, that would be the late viking period, and that would mainly be swedes. And as we all know swedes were the worst vikings of the age :)
They definitely did wear lamellar. The fact that you even say they got it from the Byzantines proves that. There are no "worst" or "best" vikings, they all did different things. Swedes didn't raid as much as the other countries, and instead traded. Sure you could see that as being "worse", but it left a far bigger impact on the world than any other viking did. Yeah, only rich vikings could afford lamellar, but why would I make the armor of the average Scandinavian Farmer, who didn't even own any armor and instead relied on only a shield. When I could make an expensive armor that would actually contribute to the way people play?
@kottekanin you are right to say that their getting it from the Byzantines proves they did wear it, but unless some of them returned to Scandinavia and brought it back with them (which, while unlikely, is possible), that was really just limited to the Varangian Guard; it was never a native Scandinavian thing. what would be a native Scandinavian thing is the mail shirt (called a Brynja) that's ironically part of your Varangian Guard armor pack; maybe if you had this set replace the mail shirt in the Varangian Guard armor pack, and made the mail shirt its own thing other than including the helmets (which're spot on by the way), titled "Norse armor" or "Viking armor", it won't be misleading about how much of a thing it was.
Not they did not "definitely" wear it. There's no proof for that. There was one lamellar armor found in birka, which was a big trading hub. All that proves is that one piece of lamellar armor made it's way to Birka, most likely through trading. Yeah, some scandinavian might have worn it. But there's no reason to believe it was a common thing.
Don't get me wrong, nice job on this and it's really cool. But calling it "viking lamellar armor" s just misleading and saying "they definitely wore it" is wrong. Thjori and CosmicTurtle8 are right. Unless they find evidence on more lamellar armor either archeologically, in literature from the time or in artwork from the time, we can't say they did wear it. From all we know now is that ONE scandinavian (in scandinavia) might POSSIBLY have worn it.
The scandinavians in the varangian guards would've worn this quite commonly I guess (I haven't put much research in the varangian guard). But the varangians aren't vikings. They were vikings (depending on which definition for the word "viking" we choose), but not during their duty for the byzantines.
You can say that you believe they've worn it, but don't say it's a fact. Because it isn't a provable fact. It's merely a theory based on ONE archeological find (or based on popculture, but I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt here and assume you're not one of those guys who see something in a game or movie and think it's accurate).
Hey, it's been more than a few months and no word. Any chance of a U12 update soon? All good if not! Just would like to know if it'll be a thing or not.
