While these aren't the BEST fantasy weapon proportions I've seen, I can say I've DEFINITELY seen WAY worse; of course, as someone who's studied REAL Norse culture and mythology in their free time, I can safely say that the Norsemen had neither double-headed battleaxes, NOR dedicated warhammers (hammer axes, that is axes with back-hammers, were their thing), so it's safe to say the double-headed battleaxes and the warhammer in this mod AREN'T actual viking weapons. On the other hand, the Medieval Megapack has a "Viking Warsword" in it, and the Norsemen DIDN'T have two-handed swords either; but it's designed so believably, you could EASILY see it as an example of a HYPOTHETICAL two-handed Norse sword.
All that to say, while I was on the fence about it for a while, even though I know the double-headed battleaxes and warhammer AREN'T actual Norse weapons, I've decided to download this mod in order to appreciate what I've decided to view as HYPOTHETICAL Norse double-headed battleaxes and warhammer. Plus, even though I actually think double-headed battleaxes are WAY over-represented in general fantasy media, I DO want a few in my game in order to see what wielding one would feel like, and right now, yours's the ONLY mod updated to the latest beta version that offers any; not even the latest version of Medieval Megapack offers a SINGLE ONE.
Dude/dudette, whichever you are, there's no pretense about it; even when I used it, I saw just how fantasy some of the weapon proportions were (ESPECIALLY with the snake battle-axe and hammer), but in the case of the OTHER weapons, their proportions AREN'T the WORST I've seen (admittedly the hafts could be a good bit thicker, but by and large, I've seen WAY worse proportions); and while archaeological evidence shows that two-handed swords, double-headed battleaxes, and dedicated warhammers WEREN'T things in Viking Age Scandinavia, people've come up with weapon designs like that with a question like "What if they DID have them" BEFORE; Skallagrim even brings it up in his Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord video, citing the game's two-handed Viking sword as an example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q12hg2Fkumk
NOW do you understand there's no pretense involved here? I've simply chosen to appreciate the hypothetics; and AGAIN, this's one of the VERY FEW (possibly, I hope beta 9 didn't break them) up to date mods that adds double-headed battleaxes, which I want in my game to see how differently they work from single-headed ones (a VR game that, in SOME fashion, allows for BOTH, like Blade and Sorcery, is pretty much the ONLY kind of game in which you can actually find that out).
In the description of the Viking War Sword, it says that it was created centuries after the Viking age by a king who liked Norse weapons. I aim for "historically plausible" weaponry in MMP for the most part. There were a few double headed battle axes in history but it's hard to find a good one that doesn't look completely fantastical. I am running out of things to add though so I may get around to that some day.
@Sushin I see; well then, here's an Idea for you; for double-headed battle-axes for MMP, how about the Indo-Persian Tabarzin? http://www.heliosauctions.com/catalog/item/3852 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabar_(axe) (read the Persia section) Obviously not EVERY Tabarzin was double-headed, in FACT, they were extremely RARE compared to the different single-headed versions; but they WERE a weapon that was used from the mid to late 16th century up to the early 20th century. And since you're generally going for historically plausible weapons in MMP, in spite of its rarity, the double-headed Tabarzin qualifies. By the way, the ones made ENTIRELY of metal have thinner hafts by NECESSITY to keep the weight down and properly balanced; and they can get away with it because most metals, ESPECIALLY steel, are much harder and stronger than ANY kind of wood.
Edit: Sorry Sushin; while there IS some relevant info on the subject in this post, I didn't realize you'd responded to my post on MMPs post page, so sorry for suggesting the double-headed Tabarzin TWICE; I don't wanna seem like I'm trying to pester you.
i really dont care anymore, the medieval norse are probaly the most wrongly represented of any culture in the world, people just slap the name "viking" on it and done. its their mod they can do what they want
You do know this is a fantasy game right? I've also studied Norse lore extensively but I have no problem with modder embellishing because it's 1. their content that they have the right to change however they want, just because it's not 100% accurate doesn't mean the creator wasn't inspired to make these weapons by Norse artifacts; and 2. it's a f*#@ing fantasy game, people also didn't shoot fireballs and lighting out of their hands, but I doubt you complained to the devs about that. If you really don't wanna use inaccurate weapons, guess what? You don't have to. Don't shame other people for having fun or not caring about 100% historical accuracy in a f*#@ing fantasy game.
Fantastic mod! My only criticism is that i dont like janky weights to weapons. I use weights when i play, so if im at the point that i can swing 8 lbs in each hand comfortably, then it takes me out of the game when my game avatar cannot, and theyre supposed to be stronger: judging by the kick-power. This may be a B&S problem, but im not sure what the cons would be if every weapon were as stiff and maneuverable as the default shortswords. That said, i love that the axes are actually efficient at killing! You have my endorsement.
My only critique is that the shields can't be gripped at an angle (an issue with a lot of mods that add shields, especially bucklers and round shields). Other than that, this mod is fantastic!
