    Great job using that AI!
When you changed the custom portraits for the holovid, are those vanilla missions or custom ones? Because we are trying to change the Vanilla ones for the Conversations. Do you know how that is done?

The screenshots do come from vanilla missions, yes.

So the holovid portraits use a separate set of sprites (starting with uixTxrConv_) instead of the normal sprites in StreamingAssets\sprites\Portraits. Those textures are not available as loose files but you can find their filenames in StreamingAssets\data\VersionManifest.csv, under ConversationTexture. There’s like 70 something of them in total, I ended up using less than 40 since I left out GenericMW portraits.

Don’t think the XAI people need more information beyond that, but for other people who might see this and could use a few more pointers: dump your portraits to a designated path in your mod (for me, that would be Animechwarrior_AnimePortraitsNovelAI\conversation), rename the portraits with the filename/id under ConversationTexture, update the mod.json file to include their type (Texture2D) and path in the Manifest and that’s it; you might want to check the aforementioned folder and the mod.json file in my mod to get an idea what’s going on.

Hope that helps. Love your work over there btw.

Thank you YaboKBDJ !! I am pretty sure that was the key piece of the puzzle we weren't able to figure out!! I totally forgot about the manifest.csv file. I will give this a shot today! and if I have questions I will let you know.

RogueAnime has been updated and published as its own mod.

    Old text for reference:

    Spoiler:
    Show

Now, how to make Animechwarrior work with RogueTech?
In order to make this mod work with RogueTech you will need to do the following:

    Anime Mod for RogueTech
    Open
     RogueTech Launcher,
    Click on "Advanced Mode",
    Click on "Disable Launch Safety",
On the prompt click on "Yes I want to shoot my own foot".

[You only have to do the above once.]

    Add "Animechwarrior_AnimePortraitsNovelAI" to "BATTLETECH\Mods\Core" [Works]

    Anime Mission Control for RogueTech
Add the anime "MissionControl" to "BATTLETECH\Mods\Core". Overwrite when asked. [Works]

Anime Commander Portrait Loader for RogueTech
If you installed "CommanderPortraitLoader" via RogueTech do the following:

Go to "BATTLETECH\Mods\Core\CommanderPortraitLoader\Portraits" and delete everything inside.
Add the anime "CommanderPortraitLoader" to "BATTLETECH\Mods\Core". [Works]

    Message to the Mod Author
RogueTech has its Portraits in the below directories:

    BATTLETECH\Mods\Core\CommanderPortraitLoader\portraits
    BATTLETECH\Mods\Core\MissionControl\sprites
    BATTLETECH\Mods\Core\RogueModulePilots\sprite
    BATTLETECH\Mods\Core\RogueTechCore\conversation
    BATTLETECH\Mods\Core\RogueTechCore\emblems\factions
    BATTLETECH\Mods\Core\RogueTechCore\portraits
    BATTLETECH\Mods\Core\RogueTechCore\sprites\illustrations
    BATTLETECH\Mods\Core\RogueTechCore\sprites\Portraits
    BATTLETECH\Mods\Core\RogueTechCrewPilots\sprite
    BATTLETECH\Mods\Core\RogueTechCore\sprites\illustrations
    BATTLETECH\Mods\Core\RogueTechCore\Vehicle Pilots

If those can be animefied, you'll practically animefy the entire mod. If you can do this mr Yabok, that would be great! (Links are on the directories listed above, so you don't need to download the entire modpack (Scheduled to be removed after 31 days from the submission of this post)).

Message to those that want to animify the entirety of RogueTech
I went ahead and replaced all of the sprites in the directories listed in the "Message to the Mod Author" section with Anime portraits found from the existing mod - HOWEVER this will lead to duplicates. If you are not bothered with that you can download RogueAnime.

Please note however that RogueAnime has stuff as well such as Parts that increase the tonnage load of your mechs.

RogueAnime also comes with fizes that I made to make the AnimePortraits work with RogueTech better because some portraits didn't even appear, however it is still buggy from time to time with portraits still not appearing.

If anyone can assist in this matter, I would be grateful.

Hey, thanks a million for everything. Also glad to hear that this mod is working for RT.

I’ll see what I can do with RT’s new portraits. There’s no guarantee when and if I will get to it though, you (as in, anyone reading this) might be better off making your own replacer mod with a guide like this.
Playing with AI art is dead simple with services like NovelAI (which I use to make this mod), commissioning actual artists would be ideal (although I’m not willing to do that for a silly little project like this), or you could swap in cat pics or something, nobody’s stopping you.

And in any case, I do not plan to touch any portraits in RogueModulePilots; they seem to be for original characters made by RT’s developers/community members, and I’m really not comfortable swapping their portraits.

Your download link for RogueTechCrewPilots seems to be broken by the way.

No problem, I really wanted this to work with RogueTech and eventually led me into a spelunking mission through their entire modpack just to get an understanding and make it work - I know it is strange but I actually enjoy doing these kinds of things. 😅

Regarding RogueModulePilots; I know what you mean and I agree, however many of them are not original characters created by the RogueTech team. For example, the portraits "Harkonnen" is from the DUNE universe and "Punisher" is from Marvel. However this is not the same with portraits such as "roguetechKODIAK"and "roguetechSavarok" as those are original characters (they are literally the developers of RogueTech).

Regarding "RogueTechCrewPilots" I reuploaded the file and updated the original link, many thanks as I didn't notice that the link went down.

Finally regarding NovelAI I did take a look at it, however I am not much of a fan of the site (or any site really) that uses both a subscription AND a purchased currency system at the same time to be able to use the AI. However do correct me if I am wrong and it is not as scummy/greedy as I perceive it to be.

Oh, thanks for this, any idea how to get it to work with BTA?  I've been transferring the pilot portrait files over from this mod to the BTA mod folders (like CommanderPortraitLoader and MissionControl), but don't know where to put the Animechwarrior_AnimePortraitsNovelAI files.  I'm assuming that what's needed for the holovid files to appear?

edit. more speifically, im trying to figure out where the conversation, mergecast, and mergeportraits, mod.json and modstate.json would go if im using BTA, thanks.

Edit edit, none of the links you provided worked, they where deleted or something, as it says "this file is not available on this server."

I fixed the links again, it seems the service provider I was using before was deleting the files before they even expired, I am now using my MegaFolder to provide my modifications in full. I updated my original post to reflect this.

Furthermore I made a few additional fixes, as stated in the text.

With regards to your question with BTA, it is most likely a similar process but you would need to take a look at the files/folders themselves and move the folders to their respective location. You can search the name of the file found in AniMechWarrior within BTA folders, that usually helps in finding their location and overwrite when necessary.

With regards to the downloads please use the new link below or find them in the original text above. :)

      Thanks again for everything.

Have you considered uploading it on Nexus/Mods-In-Exile? I mean you already gave it a cool name and all. Just drop a link to the original mod (this) and do whatever you'd like with it, easier for everyone to see your work.

I have thought about it but in all honesty I only did part of the work, since all of the portraits are your work; I only made them work with RogueTech and added some other stuff I wanted to my playthrough.

I just don't feel right to just upload it on Nexus and people think that I did everything - since not everyone reads the credits 😅

Felt more appropriate to just update it here and people know that it was more of a thing between two modders than just one solo dude. ^-^

I have a question, and forgive my ignorance, but following the guide - and performing an additional step not documented above - I cannot get conversation pictures to display.

I noticed that in the default mod, as well as the 'RogueAnime' package, the mergecast paths are listed as (using AranoGuard as example): "../../Mods/Animechwarrior_AnimePortraitsNovelAI/sprites/Portraits/guiTxrPort_SE01_AranoGuard_def_utr.png". However, technically the specific path would be "../../Mods/Core/Animechwarrior_AnimePortraitsNovelAI/sprites/Portraits/guiTxrPort_SE01_AranoGuard_def_utr.png" for just the base mod. Not sure the path for Rogueanime package.

Note - This is just an assumption based on where I'm expected to place files based on stickied directions. This will only apply to mod packs that alter mod locations, such as RogueTech.

Edit: Changing the paths in the 'mergecast' folder placed in 'Roguetechcore' must be done to point to where the files are located as it is just using the paths from "Animechwarrior_AnimePortraitsNovelAI" - which you will not have if using RogueAnime. I'm not sure, but it might be possible just to add "Animechwarrior_AnimePortraitsNovelAI/sprites/Portraits" to mods folder (remove all other contents), though I'm not sure how the Rogutech launcher will react to that.

Edit2 for those not animefying the whole of RogueTech, then you  will need to edit the paths in 'mergecast' located in "Animechwarrior_AnimePortraitsNovelAI" to have "../../Mods/Core/Animechwarrior_AnimePortraitsNovelAI/sprites/Portraits/<specific file path>.png".

@Ravenlash your mega link appears to be down (unless its just me). Any chance for a reupload?
Edit: NVM mega itself was down. Apologies. Works fine now.

Just wanted to thank you for the mod, love the anime characters and the screens for the Argo etc.  I really dislike HBS' art style for the characters.  This adds a much needed fresh take.  Thanks so much again.  Cheers !

First of all, this is awesome!  I've been play BT off and on for at least three years now, and even with mods after beating the campaign, I'm defiantly ready for a fresh look, and it feels like what battletech would look like if it was an anime.  I like both this one and the one you have for MW5.  But I do have a question, I'm currently using the BTA mod, no problem for vanilla pilots, I'm just copying and pasting you mod portraits.  But there's a lot more portraits in BTA, so I was hoping you could tell me how you made these portraits, I know you said you used a program called NovelAi, but I thought that was a story writing program?  How do you get it to do art?  Does it have somewhere you can place an image and have it convert it to a different style or something?  Thank you for your time.

NovelAI offers image generation service which is, as of now, locked behind paid subscriptions. You can upload an image (or draw something with its built-in budget MS Paint thing) or use only text input; you might want to check the official documentation at https://docs.novelai.net/image.html.

That being said, NovelAI is by no means the only AI art solution out of there – it just happens to be the one I stuck with. I was interested in playing around with the trendy stable diffusion thing around late 2022, so I bought a subscription on this dead simple online solution and eventually used them to make the two Animechwarrior mods for MW5 and BT.

I'm not really qualified to advise you on AI art and the whole ethics behind it (which is, in my opinion, a subject one absolutely need to look up and think about if they're considering generating AI art), so I can only tell you to do some digging and trust your own judgement. Not a very helpful advice I know...

Oh, sweet, ok, thanks for the explanation on how to use it, and the link.  And no worries the advice on the AI art, I appreciate that you leave it up to the individual.

I'm not an anime kinda guy but I might just use them just for the LOLZ. These look amazing!
Also thank you for figuring out how to change the conversations portraits, that was huge and saved me a lot of headaches with my mod.

    Finally, I have a question:
Do you know when the portraits under emblems/factions are used exactly ?

Thanks again and keep up the good work!

On figuring out the conversation portraits thing: The Big Deal Add-On really deserves credit for that, since they did manage to put new conversation portraits in. I simply poked around their files, saw the textures starting with uixTxrConv_ and that's basically the mystery solved: searching that in StreamingAssets\data\VersionManifest.csv and there's the exact thing I've been looking for.

On your question: It's been a while since I tested it, but I'm sure they appear in Yang Virtanen's Big Score flashpoint (from Urban Warfare DLC) and some of the Heavy Metal DLC minicampaign flashpoints. The portraits in question should show up under EMPLOYER like the FWL in this screenshot.

Hope that helps. I have the habit of purging old saves for HBS Battletech so I can't really go back and check myself.

I was thinking about using these with a reshade to archieve some type of comic book like effect, I think that would be cool. Might try that
later. Thank you for the answer, that was extra helpful.

Amazing work on the pilots and crew. I am not sure if you hand drew everyone or if AI but it all really came out great. I am not 100% all for an anime theme, but your work is far superior to the randomly generated pilot portraits! I especially like how you got the replacements into the hologram. Well done!

If only the game had a whole anime style... I literaly stopped to play that game because of the imposed crew "design", awful.
