You can do what I do, which is 'install' with vortex without any tools, and then use that as a convenient download manager to actually implement the mods with the baldurs gate mod manager. That way you get the convenience of update checking and having everything in one place with the functionality of the mod manager.
WHY did the devs remove this??? So cool! I think it would have made more sense on Wyll's horns though, like he's spirit bound with hellish script. Whereas Karlach was there as a physical servant.
