As ever HUGE thanks to Shayedd both for this, imo, phenomenal rework of a class that was really hurt by the adaptation to BG3 as well as jsut being a joy to work and interact with!
I hope you all enjoy this re-imagining and please report any issues in the appropriate area and any constructive feedback is appreciated. Just don't be a twat.
If you enjoy this or any other mod I make I would appreciate any small donations to my KoFi you feel able to make so that I can keep creating things for this game we love. Any small requests just feel free to ask and for larger class requests I'm often available for commissions if you contact me via discord at Skyeborne
Edit: To address the repeated requests, no we will not be changing the spellcasting ability. Int works best as a descriptor of the class and the fact that they are a Rogue who has learned magic in the same vein as a wizard. This is not negotiable and I would appreciate y'all respecting that.
Truly amazing mod, thank you for fixing the class and filling the missing gap of a true magic rogue! Perfect Dark Urge for me. Any chance you’d consider several elemental options for sage bolt? Would love to see necrotic. Thanks!
Would you like to make a toned-down version that has the spell progression of an Artificer or something like that? I like the concept of this class, but it's OP for my taste.
I have to agree with that. It has higher blaster potential than pure warlock (due to sneak attack + improved crit), so even with 1/3 or 1/2 spell progression it would be pretty strong. That's an extra 12d6 of damage per round compared to a Warlock EB with crits.
I guess the author is using sword bard as a reference (extra attack + dual attacks + full spell progression), but that class is only this strong because of Larian's unbalanced implementation of ranged slashing flourish which allows attacking the same enemy twice (that's more like a bug).
Also, I disagree that the spell list is this weak. All it lacks is AOE damage (and you can pick a spell from the wizard list). It has tons of control (Otto's dance is enough said) and utility (mirror image, misty step, counterspell, shield etc. ). You also get the enemies to roll with disadvantadge on saving throws, making this class a very strong controller as well (a sorcerer needs to spen 3 points to do that).
Also items such as hat of arcane acuity makes it basically have perma +10 Spell DC and Attack roll making it more accurate and uncounterable than warlock, have baked in potent robe, doubled by the elemental amulet, and an additionnal +4 from mahokshir.
The cantrip also procs sneak attack every bolt instead of every turn, meaning that a triple crit will be : (12d6+2d10+4+5+5)*3 == 318 damage for a cantrip Full spellcaster slots also means that since the cantrip is just the best damage/round you could hope for, there is no reason not to keep 8+ slots for counterspells and unblockable CCs.
The mod is a good idea and very much closer to what the arcane trickster should have been, but it's really a bit too strong.
Sage's Cunning: Cantrip critical hit threshold is reduced by 1. Learn Sage's Bolt a cantrip that deals 1d10 + Intelligence Modifier Fire Damage and gains an additional shot at levels 5 and 10 instead of increased damage.
is the additional shot by class or character level because this would change the way i build this if it is by character level i would make a Arcane trickster 8/sorcerer 4 for Quickened and not losing out on a feat if class level i would take arcane trickster 10 and either warlock 2 for devils sight and Armour Of Shadows for The graceful Cloth or fighter 2 for action surge
It looks fun as hell, and closer the pathfinder arcane trickster (which i prefer, compared to 5e version). Gotta ask, because i'm not really a number guy, is the class "balanced" or does it bring a lot of firepower compared to a wizard ?
After playing a full run with it, I can say it feels pretty good. You become what you're probably looking to be, a Sneaky Magic Assassin. Sage's Bolt hits like a truck once you hit level 5 and with 3 bolts at Level 10 it definitely feels strong. I found it to feel a bit like a stealthier but weaker Warlock, very viable though.
Your biggest gripe is going to be lack of Haste built in which is what leaves you to feel weaker than a Warlock as a Blaster, and without abusing Stealth (which you should, it's this class' entire mechanic) you're definitely going to feel "mid". I solved this by taking a level in Wizard or downloading a mod that lets you learn scrolls to learn it via Scroll. Scroll Learning is "the solution" to this class so to speak, it brings you to full power. You become a stealthy caster with a huge arsenal of strong spells, and lore wise you definitely feel like a magical thief collecting scrolls of Arcane power and studying them to become a stronger magician.
Out of curiosity how difficult do you think it would be to create a moderately altered version of this alternative version of Arcane Trickster? I had an idea for a Challenge character I wanted to do where I went hard into the Illusionist skill line rather then the Sneak Attack side of the rogue.
i.e: Lvl 3: Improved Minor Illusion instead of Sage Cantrip Lvl 6: Illusionary Self (lvl 10 Illusionist class feature) instead of Arcane Shadows
Perfect! thank u for doing. I will try it as soon as possible ^^ and I want to ask this mod if allows player to upgradation 20? OR just 12. have a nice day!
I wanna use this mod but it just crashes when i try to level up as alternative arcane trickster Edit: Nevermind the mod works, I guess the character I was trying to use it on got broken by something unrelated
The Arcane Trickster in Kingmaker and WotR is just leagues more fun than the wet noodle joke of an Arcane Trickster we got in BG3. The moment I realized ATs in 5e can't even sneak attack during spell attack rolls... my disappointment was immeasurable and my day was ruined.
Thanx you for awesome class mod. I love to see love for the trickster, they were my favorites in Pathfinder. Id wonder if u maybe can consider to add the same stuff for magic hand that casual trickster have? I just have mod that rework magic hand and adds extra stuff for trickster hand specificly. I know the point its not to build tricskter around the hand. But....i mean... its still nice to have even tho its not usefull 99 procent of the time.

Edit: though a multiclass to Wizard could prove very interesting indeed

This is the AT we deserved. Not too OP, very fun.
