These are nice subtle changes. Does this still work? If I add it, do I need to remove before playing any existing saves? Or will it just not do anything?
It should still work. Updates that significantly alter races could break things, but there havnt been any so far.
It will work in existing saves, but you may not be able to choose your starting racial cantrip. You should just get the default if so. You will need to sue the respec mirror on existing drow. NPCs that have already loaded into your save will probably use the old race data.
So long as you keep a save from before installing this, you can always revert to it if this causes issues.
Thanks for the quick response! Very nice. The only change I have to any race is an altered Dragonborn build and letting Lolth Drow choose deities.
I'll test it on an old save with a drow and see what happens upon respec. I'll let you know if I have any issues. Hopefully not since this will be perfect for a new character I want!
I think Devil Sight is a little bit on the strong side, I would have preferred something less combat oriented as a choice and more of a narrative bonus for the drow.
Something like a choice between either Advantage (Or proficiency/expertise) on Insight or Perception rolls would be better imo. Insight because the drow society are never too trusting and are raised to sus out frauds. And perception because they can see VERY well.
Devil Sight seems more of a vertical buff than these imho
Unfortunately adding choice diologues to racial progression doesn't seem to play nice. Choosing non class locked spells/cantrips is all could get to work in that regard.
Drow already get a perception proficency by default. But i could try for expertise.
I would also argue that faerie fire and and darkness are already geared towards combat, with darkness being pretty OP as is. While devil sight is pretty situational and something you can get get items for after level 5 (such as the shar gear) or get with a feat. I just thought it was narratively odd that theyd use darkness when living in an already dark environment and when being unable to see through it themselves. I could also make it a higher level.
I see the logic in adding devil sight in with Darkness and Faerie Fire, that being said as a tangent I don’t quite understand why Drow would learn to use MORE darkness as a race that dwells in the underdark but that’s a gripe with WotC and not this mod.
I think expertise in perception would be a good addition, since the choice is probably hard to code in. As for any other changes you could do Shadow Blade in place of Darkness. Shadow Blade seems like an apt candidate as it fits thematically with the race with its mechanics in particular. Only a suggestion of course.
" I don’t quite understand why Drow would learn to use MORE darkness as a race that dwells in the underdark but that’s a gripe with WotC and not this mod." Yeh, honestly it makes more sense to have devil sight than darkness.
I do like the shadow blade spell thematically, so i may actually add that. not sure yet.
My inter file search program isn't finding that in any game files. It's not a spell in the base game, it's attached to a weapon and im not sure that its effects are the same as the 5E spell. The 5E spells mod does have this spell though.
Love the mod- it adds a nice bit of utility without going overboard.
I do have a small request however: is is possible to port these changes over to the Mephi tiefling subrace? The small utility buffs you made for the drow here would synergize well with the Mephi tiefling affinity for magic.
Again- this mod is a really great lightweight utility buff. Edit- I'm apparently blind- I just realized you made a tiefling mod- I'll go over there to post my thoughts- sorry. :P
There shouldn't be any stat bonuses. Only Perception proficency from keen senses which is a vanilla Drow feature. The only thing i changed at level one was letting you choose between cantrips, instead of being stuck with dancing lights and added the subrace cantrip choices.
https://baldursgate3.wiki.fextralife.com/Drow You should get everything listed on the wiki. But with an extra subrace cantrip and a choice of cantrip instead of dancing lights.
If your sure theres an issue could you try loading character creation with no other mods and screenshot it?
Vanilla game system, min stat 8 / max stat 15 (without bonus). Max stat with bonus+2 is 17 in vanilla game.
Starting at 13 stat, it costs 2 points to increase a stat. ex) 11→12(needs 1 point) / 12→13(needs 1 point) / 13→14(needs 2 points) / 14→15(needs 2 points)
Well, your screenshot image already included additional stat points. Compare to screenshots of other mods that you've uploaded. →(According to your screenshot) Drow mod : 17 15 15 8 12 11 / Elf mod : 17 13 15 9 12 10
Good luck, and thanks for sharing these lovely mod!
Oh, one last thing!! Any kinds of these mod have a problem to respect companion. Change or add some new race cantrip to drow, Minthara won't be able to respect. Because she couldn't select a new modded race cantrip.
But I didn't check that out. Just from an experiential point of view.
Yes thats a problem with the vanilla game. You cant change astarion or shadowhearts elf cantrip in the base game either for example. There is a mod or two that allow for race respecs and origin race choices i belive, but ive not tested them.
That said, i could move non subrace choices to level 2+ to fix that. I think ill make a vanilla race version too. But i havnt figured out to edit race tables yet, so im limited to editing existing progression tables, some of which only have a level 1.
generally i consider my mods 1.0 when theyve gone a year without bug/issue reports. Functionally you can consider it feature complete at the moment, but risk any bugs people havnt found/reported.
I have a rough power level sheet here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1D4k2IADmqr-k2iEzuNdBqJKkp_xnf2VkuQ8OP00SYVg/edit#gid=0 Removing devil sight brings them in line with my other races.
You can do it yourself using my unpacked files if you want. You will need the multi tool to pack it back for use in game. I may do it myself, but no promises.

I'll play a new game with this mod!

One request, however, is a version without the added stat bonuses.
Having so many additional stat points at the very beginning tilts the balance of power too far, imo.
Excellent addition to BG3, otherwise!
