I’ll look into it. Haven’t made any mods that adds summons, so this might take a while.
Could you also point me to the mod you mentioned? The one that adds Cub as a beast companion. So I can take a look at how they organised the structures.
@ErinTanuki Ranger Beast Master - Extra Companions adds the Owlbear Cub as a companion. There version is specifically geared for progression and combat, as the Owlbear Cub will eventually grow into it's full form after a certain level. They also a made an optional version to maintain it's cub form by request
also worth looking into, because imo it's a better mod for hunter companions overall: Untamed - (Beast Master Ranger's Companion Overhaul) this one doesn't have any Owlbear of any kind. but it does have progressional companion beasts, with armor and the like. it's likely this author will eventually add the Owlbear cub themselves, after some time. They also add new beasts, but different ones like the displacer beast & panther
i really like both of these mods but they are absolutely NOT compatible with each other. imo the Owlbear cub is so damn cute and it's cool to have it as a fighting beast but i think it would best fit as a tag-along familiar. i have a long way to go in modding BG3 before i get to the point where i can do this myself. so just putting this idea out there for now. glad you're interested in the potential!
I have the spell's effects and templates set up. Only thing left is to consider the abilities and stats.
I am not well-versed in summons vs familiars, so idk where to start. My understanding is that summons/companions are combat-focused while familiars are utility-focused. With the exception of Boo, most familiars have low HP, abysmal AC, and their attacks are more debuffs than damage dealers. Honestly I have no idea what would be fitting for an Owlbear Cub familiar.
hm. a Growl/cry function to attract enemies? I'd go to the reverse route and make it a high HP familiar, but with very limited attack functions. Garbage damage/range/reach of attacks. It can grab attention and absorb damage but it's not necessarily going to hurt anyone after the fact.
And... i think need to read up more on the Owlbear cub in the wiki to say further on motion function but i'll just presume away here until i know more. Should it be able to fly, jump, escape? Not sure. Given it's size, maybe it's not quite as mobile yet as it's fully featured parent.
Probably safe to give a limited distance in it's abilities, for whatever you give. Can it fly? Probably not. Can it jump? More like a hop. Can it run? Barely. Hilarious to watch it try. I don't know how customizing that would go. Probably negative options in acrobatic/athletic stats, low strength/dex?? Horrible movement speed at the benefit of larger HP compared to all familiars
I love it so much! But Lunar Blessing stays grayed out and I can't activate it. I moved your mod to the very last slot in my load order (bg3mm) but it didn't matter. :(
uggh sorry for the double post, i put this as a reply on accident!

I uh. I seem to have forgotten to add back the "Combat Only" thing to Lunar Infusion ability. Now it is usable outside of combat.
I removed that modifier so I could test the abilities more easily. Oh well. It doesn't break the game or anything. Just be careful if you want to use it outside of combat, since the beam damages all non-ally targets, including neutral NPCs.
Compatibility patches are up, for Druid Wild Shape Overhaul v0.5.1 and all add-ons.
A few minor known issues, nothing gamebreaking:
White owlbear form and Owlbear cub form are put in the same spell container, and the Brown owlbear form is separate. No impact on gameplay, but may lead to confusing menu navigation.
Without the ritual add-on for the Overhaul, Owlbear Cub form would also be non-ritual, despite the tooltips. I'll be honest, I don't think this would impact the gameplay, so I left it untouched. Let me know if ritual casting is crucial to gameplay.
Combat wildshapes would highlight Action instead of BonusAction. The actual effect still uses BonusAction, as it should. It's just an UI issue, that came from the overhaul mod. I left it untouched in case the creaters of that mod decide to patch it.
THANK YOU for this cutie as a mod I've been waiting for someone to create a mod like this for so long, now I just have to wait for someone to make a mod to summon hollyphant as a mini cleric summon and life will be complete <3
(and if you could make a version where this is a summon that would be amazing as well)
make sure you read the mod description very carefully! you dont have to turn on the effect that summons npc encounters. You can just have a cutie owlbear pet, tressym, or a hollyphant. :) I personally run it with the encounters on, since it can spawn treasure goblins that run away and only live for a short time. It's really fun. but it DOES require a new game!

There's one that adds it as a beast companion, surprised no one's tried just adding it as a familiar

They may possibly incorporate yours into theirs, or you could possibly patch this lil cutie into theirs?
Need to ask for their permissions first since a patch would sort of alter and repurpose a portion of their creation. Better safe than sorry.

Cheers.

It's also pretty amazing in its own right for all the other cool content it provides.
