the crab may be identified as junk for autosell based on some of its entries in its Object stats file (im guessing, after playing around in the toolkit). If you use the auto-sell bag you can tell it to create a sell list per game and not use the internal junklist in the options in the MCM. This stopped the autosell from selling the crab everytime i put it in my inventory. When I removed "hermit crab" from the auto sell automatic pre-populated list it still didnt keep the crab in my inventory, so i think the crab may have a different stats ID than "crab."
About the number of spawns: the toolkit gives general descriptions of treasure and where it might populate but its doesnt tell you actual locations that use the treasure table, or how many instances will copy the list. Its very trial-and-error.
I think the hermit crab has been added to the treasure table for the "shipwreck" barrel, which seems to populate the four barrels in front of the temple door and two boxes in front of the beach near astarion. You can change the treasure table entry to not spawn for every instance - OPhForFuksSake has a treasure table 2 video on his youtube that explains the entry syntax. Its totally non-intuitive but a simple fix.
Hello can you please download the new version and help me check if its in this barrel? I might have uploaded the wrong spawn spot. This version will spawn the crab in 4 different places on the beach so it might help.
yeah just in case i made a cheat version that spawn it in the tutorial chest too you can use any tutorial chest summoning mod if youre already mid game.
I put it in the barrel in the photo in the description. Even tested it myself but after a lot more testing it seems like it only works on a save before you crashed on the beach, so basically a new game.
I have some ideas but I have to look into making it :) Current idea is making a "Feed" interaction and the hermit will give you a buff or sth. But i have to learn the logic of removing an item upon using a skill to do it. if you know a spell or skill that remove item upon use let me know :)) Otherwise i can make a “Pet” action to the same effect but i like the other idea more

Where did you put hermit before newest update?
