Major Patch 6: works fine.
These are unlikely to change much more now that the game's been out a while. You should be set with the same file.
I've put an example entry in Articles, or here: https://www.nexusmods.com/baldursgate3/articles/281
These documents are how you customize starting equipment for your heroes, companions, and other NPC characters. You must start a new game for the changes to manifest because, you know, they're starting equipment.
Doing this has become slightly more complicated since early access. And I noticed no one seems to be uploading these files anymore, so, I'll do you a solid.
Starting equipment for classes and companions has since full release been divided into 3 different folders and documents - Larian's problem, not mine. Below is a list of the characters/classes' names, their equipment entry name, and their locations.

To put something in their inventory, simply list the IDs of the items you'd like. It's not limited to armour, you can paste in names of camp clothes, jewelry, potions, food, tools, consumables, etc. etc. You can also use the IDs of any modded items, e.g. everything from Baskets. They work on the same principle. Whatever is listed first the character will prioritize equipping (or maybe last?), but everything will go into their inventory.
You can give yourself 100 camp packs to never loot again. Just saying.
CAUTION:
- Don't edit the equipment of NPC characters unless you're absolutely certain of what you're doing. What you put in their inventory is not always related to the loot they drop.
- DO NOT DELETE, or alter the other entries you don't use. People will be unarmed and naked. Unless, of course, that is what you want.
- You can space out the entries with linebreaks however you like. You can also reorder them.
Yes. If you've never done it before, it's going to take some time. The point is it will save you time digging through your barrels of clothes later on.
I recommend editing something small, say adding a hat for the default barbarian, or just stripping them bare. Then start a new game, going to character creation and seeing if the change worked. If it did, then you can start to spend some time listing down your stuff.
SO, HOW DO I FIND WHAT I WANT?
If you know how to unpack game documents and use index search in BG3 Modder's Multitool, of course, do that. For those that don't know or can't be bothered, I've supplemented three txt documents of all the vanilla armour and weapon and items entries cobbled together, for your command-f pleasure. For the names of modded items, you must look in the individual mod's files. However, even if you do know everything, the most efficient way to familiarize, visualize, and pick out items that you want is to download an "all items" mod of some kind, find what you like in the game first, then attempt to identify the document entry in reverse.
INSTALL:
Drag the entire Public folder into your game data folder, (e.g. C:\Steam\steamapps\common\Baldurs Gate 3\Data). If you have other loose mods, let the contents mix. Delete the files individually according to the paths above to remove.
