Whelp, one year and some change later... New versions of the mod for both color types are now available that should fix the issues folks were having. Thank you so much to the commenters who discovered the issue and posted the workaround! I don't have the game downloaded anymore, but hopefully this small change works.
Doesn't seem to work for me. Using MacOS GOG Patch 8 hot fix 30. There doesn't seem to be an existing Public folder in my Data folder. And everything else is "pak" files in my Data folder. This is the first time I'm installing a mod that doesn't use the in game mod manager (which also seems to use pak files), so I'm at a bit of a loss here. I also disabled all my existing mods to make sure there wasn't any conflicts and this mod still didn't work.
Just wanted to confirm it works. i even have that naked guardian mod (im ashamed) which is also a public folder drag in game files. i just added the asset and renamed it according to another comment.
Thank you for making this mod. i was having serious issues seeing the spell slot. thought it was a skill issue aha.
Reporting that this works as of 10/21/2024 by just dumping the unzipped folder hierarchy into the data folder as prescribed. I didn't have to do lowrez or anything other than pasting it in and restarting the game.
"Simple steps to follow to make the mod work. Unzip the zip "Colorblind Spell Slots" wherever you want (desktop). Copy / paste its content (Public) in ...steamapps\common\Baldurs Gate 3\Data"
I didn't have to do this:
In the Public\Game\GUI folder rename the "Asset" folder to "AssetsLowRes"

I have tried downloading manually and through the Vortex manager, this is the only mod I'm using, and I have checked countless times that I'm extracting the mod's "public" folder into the game's "data" folder. Not sure what's wrong, but I really can't get it to work. I'm trying the Type B download. Not sure what's going wrong here.
My apologies for the late reply! I don't check this often. I commented on the bug report, but re-posting here for visibility:
I think I found the problem. It's not an issue with BG3 as the files this mod replaces were not affected by the patch. However, there was a recent update to the Vortex mod manager that could cause the problem.
Before, you'd need to set the mod type to "BG3 Replacer", but it looks like that no longer works. There is a new type, "BG3 Loose", which is now automatically set when you install this mod. With the type set as BG3 Loose, this mod should again work as intended. To switch over, completely uninstall the mod, then reinstall. It should set the type automatically to BG3 Loose and you'll be good to go. :)
If that doesn't work, make sure you don't have any mod manager mods or loose files that conflict with the changes this mod makes (Any .dds files with "spellslot" in the name within these folders: \Baldurs Gate 3\Data\Public\Game\GUI\Assets\ CC and Shared and Tooltips).
Sorry ya'll, I've tried everything and I can't reproduce this issue. I've been successful with loose files, vortex, no mods installed, the 22 mods I usually use installed, on a new save, on an old save... pretty much every combination of factors and still have no problems.
Just to be absolutely clear, you've tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling the mod by going into C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Baldurs Gate 3\Data and deleting the "Public" folder , then replacing it with the "Public" folder in the loose files, correct? And you're sure you're not trying to put this into C:\Users\XXXXX\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\Mods, right?
@BongBongzzang - Hmm, it's possible that one would conflict. I noticed someone in the bug reports saying the resource icons disappeared, which maybe demonstrates that the Better Hotbar mod does do something with those icons. Dunno though. I'll have to try it out when I find the time.
Yes, I'm not trying to unpack your mod into a catalog. C:\Users\XXXXX\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\Mods
I do not use (and have not used before) any mod managers for BG 3. I just unpacked your mod to my D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Baldurs Gate 3\Data directory. And everything worked, but after Patch 5, it stopped works
Now I've tried deleting the Public directory and unpacking the mod again, and I'm not getting any effect.
"Damn, this is so weird. It works fine for me and my spouse on different comps... I know some other mods that use loose files to overwrite textures have had some issues since patch 5, but again it's only for some folks. Gotta admit, I'm really just a monkey with a keyboard when it comes to this stuff as it's my first mod ever (and a simple one at that! lol). I'll keep investigating when I can. If anyone has some insight on what might have changed, please let me know."
I had the same problem with my own mod : My mod didn't have the folder AssetsLowRes and this folder seems to be used at 1980x1080. So maybe you need to produce a low resolution of your mod and put it in this folder to fix that.
I've got no sight impairments, yet I consider this mod very thoughtful, as normal spell slot icon's contrast to the empty spell slot icon is very symbolic. I can't just tell how many spell slots I got, I have to concentrate for a moment to see it.

Maybe the reason it doesn't work for me is because I'm using the mod from this link.

My mod didn't have the folder AssetsLowRes and this folder seems to be used at 1980x1080.
So maybe you need to produce a low resolution of your mod and put it in this folder to fix that.
Hope it helps 🙏
Thanks!
