While this is nice, it's unfortunate that even with this, knocking out is effectively the same thing as killing, since NPCs will still act as though you killed the knocked out enemies - and on that note, f*#@ you Wyll, I knocked him out, he's not f*#@ing dead you d!(|<
Fire is the safest element to go with on magic builds. Fireball and fire bolt are safe absent oil/explosive objects. If you want to cheat cheat engine has a script over on their forms that gives you a lv6 fireball at any level added to you and that works fine. It appears it's safe to hit a knocked out corpse with an aoe, but the trouble lies in the moment of death damage calculation which means added status damages can't be in your build (burning, lightn charge,etc..). You need to be very careful with anything that adds damage on top of however things that buff you on spell use like the elemental hat of acuity/necklace of augment are safe.
The legendary quarter staff adds those status things on many moves so it's not safe to use its skill. The spellsparkler does the lightning charge so it's not safe. You might want to go infernal rapier-which is fire (summon planar) or something like that.
Water/lightning combo doesn't work well with this but the early spell witch bolt which remains attached to whoever you cast it on for a multi follow up (even their corpses) doesn't over kill them and works.
Thrown weapon Nyrulna does not work with this. It might be the extra lightning damage.
Multi hit spells (magic missile, ray of fire,etc..) don't work well because the second hit can over kill them. However you can use them if you whittle them down to certainty but due to the wide range of damage on those it's not practical.
Avoid all status options from gear such as heat-->burning, lightning charge (at 5 if killed it won't work),etc... If it reads your attacks/spells inflict....don't use it, it prob won't work.
Summoned creatures don't seem to work on the kill here. Haven't tested many to make this blanket statement but not magic wise it's looking.

Does it cause all spells to Knock Out instead of kill?
For others some tips on what works:
