The College of Cacophony - A Bard Subclass

While bards across the Multiverse will praise music's truth and beauty, members of the College of Cacophony know that - above all else - music should be loud.

This is my first subclass mod, and was originally published on mod.io using the BG3 Toolkit. Please let me know in the comments about any issues you encounter while using it. This is very much Version 1 so feedback on the various features is welcome!

The College of Cacophony subclass is intended to support a Thunder-focused offensive archetype for Bards, combining AoE spells with a variety of debuffs.

Version 1.01 also adds a small number of Thunder spells from the base game and the Mystra's Spells mod to the Bard spell list and the Magical Secrets list. You do not need Mystra's spells to use this subclass - those spells simply won't appear if you don't have it. These spells are available to ALL Bards, but will be of most benefit to those of this College. These spell list changes will eventually be moved to a separate mod I am planning, along with some custom homebrewed Thunder magic.

Features By Level

3 :
  • Chordstrike - A unique cantrip that deals Thunder damage in a cone. On a failed Constitution saving throw, targets take Thunder damage that scales with both cantrip progression and the size of your Bardic Inspiration die. In addition, on a failed save it inflicts 2 stacks of Reverberation.
  • Thunderous Soul - You are immune to the Silenced condition and have Resistance to Thunder Damage.

6:
  • Echoes of Power - You gain a number of Echoes equal to your Proficiency bonus, which recharge on a Short or Long Rest. Choose 3 passive traits from the following list that inflict various conditions whenever your spells deal Thunder damage to a target, consuming an Echo for each affected target. Only one passive can be active at a time.
    • Concussive Echo: Targets must make an additional Con save against your Spell Save DC or lose their Concentration.
    • Rupturing Echo: Targets take 2 stacks of Bleeding.
    • Disorienting Echo: Targets are Dazed and Off Balance for 3 turns.
    • Reverberating Echo: Targets take 1 stack of Reverberation. (Stacks with Chordstrike and other effects)
    • Impulsive Echo: Targets must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be pushed 3 meters.
    • Fracturing Echo: Targets are Vulnerable to Thunder damage for 2 turns.

9:
  • Echoes of Power - Choose a 4th Echo from the above list.

11:
  • Calamitous Harmony - A powerful spell dealing Thunder damage and disabling enemies that fail a Con save, which can be recast repeatedly for several turns. (This is intended to be the Level 14 ability for the subclass, but is added at Level 11 for players who use the vanilla level progression.)

12:
  • Replace Echo - You may replace one Echo of Power you know with another.

Spell List Modifications - * Denotes a spell from Mystra's Spells
  • Bard Cantrip - Booming Blade*
  • Level 3 - Thunder Step*
  • Magical Secrets (Bard level 10) - Elemental Weapon, Destructive Wave

Current Issues & other information- Please read!
  • The hotbar icon for Echoes of Power does not accurately show the number of remaining Echo resources - I will need to build a custom icon at some point which will probably require ImprovedUI.
  • This should work with mods that allow Level 20 progression, including two extra opportunities to Replace an Echo. I will release a separate version with a stronger Calamitous Harmony at level 14 after more testing/feedback on the current version.
  • Several icons & tooltips have minor issues or inconsistencies.
  • This seems to play nice with other Bard subclass mods, but please let me know if there are any issues.

I recommend using mods that provide additional Thunder spells (such as 5e Spells or Mystra's Spells) along side this mod. I also play with Rebalance - Common Effects which improves the damage of Reverberation, and recommend it or something similar.
