I think im gonna bite the bullet and just do every weapon. Ill do pikes first after spears. Stay tuned as ill probably put them all on one mod page, for both my sanity and yours. ill put a link to it in this mods description when it's ready.
Does anyone know if using this mod also alters the damage calculation for throwing spears as well? Seems to work fine with spears as melee, but I just can't wrap my head around the throwing mechanics. Trying to figure out if this makes a DEX based spear throwing build possible
Base damage for weapons with the thrown property should be the same as their mele damage. With finnesse weapons they will use strength if it's higher than dex for both attack and damage rolls.
Throws always count as an unarmed mele attack for abilities like tavern brawler and spore druids bonus poison damage.
Throws don't apply magic weapon effects. Im not sure if that includes bonuses form +1 etc.. magic effects. Thi may have also been patched since i played last.
Sometimes regular improvised damage is added too. Like when the weapon hit's a large enemy and then falls, it will hit the enemy again while it falls for improvised weapon damage based one weight.
Any chance of making a variant of this mod that also adds "Extra reach" trait to spears on top of the Finesse trait? If possible, make it conditional so you have to use the spear two handed in order to get it. It would give one a stronger incentive to use spears without a shield. Assuming that it is possible, adding a similar condition in order to make the spear finesse would be interesting as well.
Could one perhaps change the "Extra reach" trait to require using the weapon two handed or not having another weapon or shield in the off hand in order for it to be active? It would not affect the normal reach weapons as they are already 2h weapons by default. But it means that if you gave the trait to spears you would have to use the weapon by itself to make use of it.
The way i edited spoears theirs no conditonal parameter for the trait tags. However i belive it just adds a passive, in the same way magic spells might. Passives and buffs in the files can have conditonal effects. So i think you could make a custom buff that applies the same effects you wan't only while the conditons you want are true.
Theirs two problems with that though. It wouldn't be registered by other effects looking for the finesse or reach tags. Such as the polearm master feat. You would also need to remove finesses and or reach from every weapon to avoid having two of the same effect at the same time, causing even more compatibility issues.
See the bug report here: https://www.nexusmods.com/baldursgate3/mods/1005/?tab=bugs&jump_to_comment=134111861 They had the smae issue. It's due to not having an updated script extender. Nothing to do with this mod, which doesn't contain or edit any scripts. Most likely your running a UI or HUD mod that relies on Script Extender and eithe the mod or Extender are out dated.
Would you mind if i moved this discussion to the bugs tab?
Is it possible to fix the bug with the polearm master feat's bonus attack, which always uses STR, and change it to be done with the same ability modifier as the main attack? For example, using DEX if done with the finesse glaive, or CHA if done by a pact of the blade warlock. Please, it seems that no one has resolved this bug yet and in this link you can see that other people are also experiencing this: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1086940/discussions/0/3823047940156509851/
Your correct it defiently seems to be a bug with the vanilla game. The 5E rules specifically state it should use the normal modifers and BG3s description mentions nothing to the contrary. It also seems to not use any other relevant buffs either, like great weapon master, according to the wiki.
At a brief read on other mods and some forums, it seems the feat is largley hard coded. Meaning we need to hope it's included in the eventual official modding tools or wait for script extender devs to reverse engineer the relevant scripts ( i think, not my speciality). In the mean time we can pretend it was an intentional design to nerf an OP feat :P
Spears are great for their simplicity, but if you've ever seen a well-trained spear fighter go at it, oh yeah, they're dex weapons. Lore friendly confirmed.
Most weapons require more dex than strength IRL. Even/especially greatswords and clubs. Realisticly strength should be a damage modifier, while dex is used for accuraccy/attack role. But it is just a game.
While I love this mod, spear usage in history has been strength based since the Greek phalanx onwards. All the Chinese monk movies, and other martial arts pop culture are more based on either religious rituals, or pure fiction. So in essence spears are, or were, always the tools of a group that never intended to work dexterously or intelligently, but rather a hold your grounds or inch forward brute strength based warfare.
So I really loved the mod for BG3 and DnD purposes, but let's not lose sight on what spears are, and have always been. This is not real world lore friendly, and nor should it be, it's just pure gaming mod fun.
You clearly never seen a trained fighter using a spear properly. Spears need more dex than strength simply because you have a smaller damage generator (The tip) that is located far from the grav center of the weapon so it's harder to handle. Sure you need strength, but you need a lot more dexterity to be accurate. There is a reason why the spear was the most used weapon in history, is versatile (It can be used in a group or in solitary), permits the weilder to be at distance and is an excelent weapon against armored foes. Spears are not weapons for brutes.

Indeed a blade doesn't do significantly more or less damage depending on your strength, even a weak thrust is gonna be lethal if you hit basically anywhere on the torso, throat or head. The only exceptions are that it might allow you to peirce armor and bone more reliably.
weird question. do you think it would be possible to make/retexture a spear to look like a sword visually? (In home games I would often reflavor a spear + PAM, as a dude with longsword. currently there is nothing like that in bg3).
Hey thank you for the unpacked mod! I am making Shadowheart into a cleric/gloomstalker and this lets me use her badass spear as the fierce weapon it should be
thank u for great mod , spears are damn nice now when they are actualy useful with this mod . Can u make same mod but for mace weapons , it would be nice to play cleric focused on dex without having to worry about weapon requirements.

Dex based throw build is possible, but your probably better off with str so you can add tavernbrawler and throw further. 5E has balanced dex around using dedicated ranged weapons like bows.
Try this subreddit too. they are pretty knowledgable about the mechanics and min maxing: https://www.reddit.com/r/BG3Builds/comments/16smxfk/dex_throwing_build/
