"You can be my wingman anytime."
"Bullshit. You can be mine."

- LT Tom "Iceman" Kazansky and LT Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, Top Gun (1986)

This mod adds one-time spawnable wingman feature to F-14A | Top Gun: Maverick (a.k.a. F-14A -TGM-) for Skin 7 (Maverick Skin) and Skin 8 (Iceman Skin). The wingman can be ordered to attack with missiles by pressing Multiplayer Radio Up button, or to follow player and provide reload and homing buff data link by pressing Multiplayer Radio Down button. The wingman spawns with Iceman Skin if the player uses Maverick Skin, and spawns with Maverick Skin if the player uses Iceman Skin.

INSTALLATION

This mod comes with only one choice for installation - one file install.

1. In the Files section of the mod page, download the mod archive file.
2. Extract the .pak file contained within to your game's ~mods folder
The folder should be placed in <ACE COMBAT 7>/Game/Content/Paks/

FURTHER NOTES & KNOWN ISSUES

  • Compatibility untested with weapon swap or model mods for F-14A -TGM-
  • The wingman is single-use only per mission. Once used, it cannot be replenished by return line or phase change. Using return line also despawns the wingman. Restarting from checkpoint allows them to be respawned (with droptank-trigger).
  • On death or mission phase change, the wingman leaves behind its friendly target box
  • The wingman cannot be targeted or shot down by normal enemy fire, but can be shot down by CIWS or missile-intercepting lasers
  • The wingman's speed may cause its missiles to miss. Flying low while the wingman has not slowed down may also risk the wingman crashing.
  • The wingman's flight pattern and roll positioning is hard to predict and no potential fix is known.
    • Due to this, it is not reliable to make pair-flight screenshots of
  • When scrolling up/down using up/down button of controller to select Special Weapon during return line session, command SFX will play (if those buttons are used for MP radio button up/down as well).
    • If this is done before deploying, it will disable wingman deployment
  • Maverick/Goose and Iceman/Slider pilot models use the game's default pilot model/texture (more in Author's Notes below)
  • IEWS effect is still rendered even with no HUD (this also happens in base game). No-IEWS file is provided for clean recording / screenshotting
    • Note that the issue regarding flight pattern and roll position still exists.
  • The wingman may struggle catching up to the player due to its low maximum speed
    • Maximum speed was chosen to be such to improve reliability against ground target. Even so, they may still have difficulty hitting ground targets, especially smaller stationary ones.

AUTHOR NOTES

This mod was made as a tribute to the late Val Kilmer, who played Tom "Iceman" Kazansky in the movies Top Gun (1986) and Top Gun: Maverick (2022). Fans of Ace Combat are likely to be familiar with the movies, especially with one of the DLCs for ACE7 featuring planes from Top Gun: Maverick.

Much regrettably, this mod was relatively "rushed" and missing details that would have made it a proper "send-off", mainly the pilot helmets (due to my inexperience in making textures from references) and F-14 external fuel tanks (due to lack of assets at my disposal). It is also pretty much a "reskin" to my previous F-35C with Wingman UAV mod. In addition, this mod lacks my usual format of multiple install options and custom loadout. Still, I hope this can be at least a small form of tribute by having the two Aces fly together as wingman for each other.

(Also please don't think of this as "Iceman gets replaced by drone" - it's not my intention!)
