It's called the Electromagnetic Launcher...because that's what it is. "Rail gun" is more of a colloquial term. The only reason characters call it a railgun is because it's easier to say. Besides, the weapon description calls it a rail gun.
The text isn't inaccurate. EML is the technical name, which is what any military designation would use, to distinguish it from naval guns etc. Rail gun is the more general name, which is what people would use when speaking.
Same deal as the Active Protection System, or APS, on arsenal birds. Of course they're energy shields, and are referred to as shields by characters in the game. But to signify its unique method of operation and the unique technology behind it, it has that APS designation, and is formally referred to as such, setting it apart from other types of shields.
