I've been using a grenadier for a while now, with edited specialist and ranger skills.
I can use the gremlin heal ability without a gremlin, and sword equipped. Likewise, I can use the sword equipped, and use grenade launcher, it just uses a sword slash animation, while using same range as grenade launcher, but less dmg... If I remember correctly, the specilist's last revival skill won't work for me, nor hack. Fan fire and lightning hands work without a pistol, along with many other skills.
Sharpshooters actually get 2 abilities when they are promoted to squaddie, the Squadsight one you see and another one called PistolStandardShot that you can't see. To let the other use the pistols standard you'll need to give them the PistolStandardShot ability in the defaultclassdata.ini file.
boolsook1 you need to change Slash to be on Primary instead of Secondary weapon, then all of your soldiers will be able to do some pretty hilarious stuff. Like bolt up and shotgun ADVENT point blank in the back of the head as part of their move action.
I highly recommend against giving anything to Specialists though as their hacking basically breaks (crashes the game) for the rest of your days. Leave them with their Gremlins.
When the game starts it pulls data from the default files reads and appends changes from active mods and creates the files in your documents folder. making them read only will mean any mod that changes the relevant file will not work as intended.
