Either open the config.json file in your mods/Portraiture folder (with Visual studio) or download Generic Mod Config Menu and change it there (in game scroll down the settings tab and click the gear symbol)
This worked for me, so maybe it'll also work for you.
Go to your Portraiture folder, and go to Portraits. When you make your folder for the portrait mod you want (Like DCBurger for example), Make the folder and ONLY put the pictures into it. Just the .png files, and maybe a copy of the .json files just to be on the safe side like I did. Seems like the Portraiture mod doesn't like peeking into separate folders... at least it didn't for me.

Hi! Sorry I was wondering if you could elaborate! I'm trying to download the DC Burger portraits and they're not appearing as an option when I press "p". Currently I have it set like Mods/Portraiture/Portraits then all the DCBurger pngs and copies of the .json files. Whenever I put the pngs in a folder (labeled DCBurger) it actually crashes my game when I try speaking with anybody ;v;
I don't think you need the .json files. I use DCBurger and I just copied the .png files and that's it. It works for me.

I tried it but unfortunately it's still not changing ;; I do get the HDP option when clicking "m" but it doesn't change anything :(( Thank-you for the help though!
I'm having trouble choosing among several awesome portrait packs. Wish this mod let me specify a portrait pack for each season so it'd change them automatically. Then I could, like, have more cartoony stuff near the summer and more dramatic stuff near the winter, that sort of thing.
(...actually I'd also like to be able to swap in mods that shift the character sprites as well, but that's likely asking too much. And some of them alter more than just the sprites. Ah well.)
There is a way to do it if youre serious enough about changing the seasonal portraits. its honestly low effort to get it to work. For example, lets say you like the portraits in a pack but want to add some winter portraits from a different pack when you want it to be "dramatic" in winter. rename these desired portraits from, "Abigail" to "Abigail_winter" and so on, then add that .png file into the portrait pack youre currently using. the portraiture mod is capable of changing "Abigail" portraits and "Abigail_winter" during their respective season. Just be sure youre naming the files correctly, as its capitals sensitive. Just tested this with penny during fall and winter with two completely unrelated portrait mods. seems to work just fine
I've been reading that the beach ones have to be renamed to _IslandSouth. Does anyone know how to fix the ParrotBoy portrait? It breaks on ginger island but I got no idea what I'm supposed to rename for him.

If anybody could help it wold be greatly appreciated!! Im trying to figure out how to make the portraits appear in game but doesnt work. I followed the instructions in the descprition but the most I can do is see the folder when i try to change the portrait in game but thats about it.
I currently have talkohooeys in the portraits mod when made a new folder and extracted it in that folder but when i try to talk to someone and try to switch the portraits it shows that theres nothing there. I want to download 3 portrait mods (Ohodavi's anime mod, talkohlooeys, and DCBurgers portraits) so i can switch between them whenever. I only had Ohodavi's mod installed before through vortex.
EDIT: Dont know what happened but its fixed now. I made an edit about how some of it still didnt work literally 2 min ago but decided to deploy mod on vortex and it fixed it ._. The comment above this by GreyWolfCPD helped A LOT. (BTW you dont need the pytk.json files inside the portraits folder for DCBurgers for me at least not sure if anybody might need this)

Edit: Ok I found the reason why. The portraits must have the "w" of winter smaller. If you use it in capital letter, it won't work.
