This would be a very useful information. I like some textures in some landscape mods and don't like the other's would be great to have ability to compate textures without wasting time on testing every texture of the every pack on my own. Onfortunately, this means that I can only hope that comeone like you does it.

However, you would definitely benefit from an SKSE plugin which would recurse over the textures folder in game archives, finds all meshes which use those textures (either automatic or via manual mapping), for each mesh applies the mod's texture, apawns in a test scene, moves game camera to various preconfigured positions and makes screenshots, automatically naming them following some schema. I reckon if you could feed to ChatGPT the documentation for the address library and relevant concepts related to Creation Engine?, It might actually write a plugin for you.

This obscene amount of work should not be done by living breathing human. I wish I could have helped, but I only know javascript -__-. But I can create an installer which would iterate over mods which user wants to compare, present to them your examples, lets choose which texture they want to use, memorizes chosen options and copies chosen texture to the ourput folder which can be zipped and installed as a mod. If user wants to change their mind they can update their choices in the app. IDK what to do with custom texture path's. Some sort of manual mapping might be required (i.e. you would need to tell which default texture path the custom texture path corresponds to). If you could find someone who could to the SKSE part, I can add sliders for comparison.

Find me in discord if you are interested, the same username.

Wow, this is exactly what I was looking for! Too few mods include comparison direclty to vanilla. You are doing Dagoth Ur's work here.

By the way, the textures labeled "SE" are vanilla, right?

Yes. Originally work began before SE was ever announced. But I've deprecated Oldrim so SE is just vanilla.

i got here because i was trying, as a layman (user not modder) to finally understand wtf meshes vs textures are.  I was like, "is xp32 skeleton a mesh or texture? what's the latter two anyway?"...i found fairly quickly that a mesh is like a chicken wire frame and the texture is the skin you wrap around it (so if the mod lacks the former you get invisible stuff, and the latter you get purple/blue color)

still trying to figure out where xp32 and the unp/cbbe stuff fall into.

And that's how i google stumbled upon this thankless yet infinitely fascinating 'mod' you're grinding away at.

lol hi. Yeah, it doesn't get attention so I'm doing it mainly because I feel like it. My understanding is xp32 skeleton is neither a mesh or texture mod. It's a skeleton mod, which other mods use to make different bodies move correctly or to add physics. CBBE changes meshes and textures I believe.

I don't focus on character mods as much as most people though because I don't play characters with huge boobs and such.

So glad to hear you are still here and working on this project. Even with all the new mods being released every day your pictures still are very helpful. Many mods are old enough, but good, and people still use them. You provide an instrument to choose at least from these. Can't thank you enough!

Thanks. After a lot of work, 2 weeks ago I've managed to write a script that has correctly screenshotted 820 screenshots in a row for all of whiterun textures. I believe I can automate my way into doing all the work without losing my mind. I still hope to really start testing by end of H1 2024 and to have a good release at end of 2024. I've been working on this for 5+ hr a day every day for past few months but right now I'm working on the backend stuff and new updates can't come out until it's done by H1 2024.

This is an outstanding work ! It made me discover some completely forgotten mods , only found on Oldrim (Villages Visual Rebirth). Endorsed !

Erica, your work helped me so much that it's beyond telling. I had tremendous troubles choosing between retexture mods, was literally staring at the screen to death trying to spot tiny details. I was so happy when I stumbled upon your page! Thanks to your project, I systematized my texture choices and finally decided what is worth changing within the overhaul packs. Thank you for all the hard work and for the brilliant idea behind!

I would be delighted to see new releases, but it is already incredibly helpful.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad I've helped. My intention is still to work on the project, it's just I can't guarantee a timeline. It's more of a 'I work on it when I can' kind of a deal.
