I would like to point out that Delvin, Vex, and Brynjold are actually guild masters, which is why they wear guild master armor. Mercer Frey is the guild leader, if anything, he should get special guild leader armor.
There is no indication anywhere in-game or on UESP that these three are guild masters, and they talk about the position as if it were a one-man-slot, so I disagree.
Delvin, Vex and Brynjolf are much above the regular thief rank. In fact, Brynjolf seems superior to both Delvin and Vex (he is like the Master's right hand man or the "vice-boss"). However, it's weird they wear an armor set identical to mercer's. If their colors were changed to grey (Linwe's/Tonilia's armor), they'd be set apart from common thieves, and at the same time, the guild master. Really, changing their colors to anything BUT the Guild Master's armor OR the regular set would suffice.
