ARCHERY PERK TREE OVERHAUL
by jknjb

THIS IS THE VANILLA VERSION!  I will be porting this mod to Skyrim Special Edition some time after that comes out.  i expect it will take a
few days simply because Steam's servers are probably going to be pegged
with downloads for a while.

===============
DESCRIPTION:
===============

Have you ever noticed that the perks in the Archery perk tree are arranged in a cute little bow-and-arrow pattern, but that the perks themselves are subordinate to the pretty design?

For instance, retrieving arrows and moving with a drawn bow seem like skills you would learn BEFORE sticking enemies with critical shots,  especially if you're a hunter.  In fact, CRITICAL SHOT has no business gating HUNTER'S DISCIPLINE and RANGER, nor does BULLSEYE have any business being at the end of both branches of the perk tree.  Or, really, any business being in the perk tree at all.  Think about it - you shoot a bandit, and you're good enough at targeting him so he tips over.  He's not dead, just...napping.  For a few seconds.

All I get for my 100 archery skill is BANDIT TIPPING????

AND, you can move all over the place while you're shooting and still do twice the base damage because you have OVERDRAW80.  That makes no sense at all.

So, forget all that.  Time to shake things up a bit.

=================
THE FINE PRINT
=================

I made this mod to accomodate my own playing style, but it may be useful to others as well.  It modifies some of the vanilla archery perks, and adds some new ones, including new mastery-level perks so you get something useful for having a 100 skill besides bandit tipping.

Please note that I made this for my game.  I've played it a fair bit and so have the beta testers, but it's not what I would consider exhaustively tested.  If you find a bug, or think the perks could be improved, let me know.  I'll try to fix any bugs, and I'll consider any suggestions in the spirit in which they were given.  However, I consider this to be more or less complete as is.

In other words, I made this mod for me, and am making it available to you.  Be constructive, bad manners will not get you very far.  If you don't like this mod, revert to your hard save and move on.

THIS MOD IS A NEXUS EXCLUSIVE.  IT'S FREE, IF YOU PAID FOR IT, YOU GOT SCREWED.

Please respect my wishes and do NOT upload it to ANY other site without my permission.  If you want to use any of the changes made by this mod in a mod of your own, PLEASE CONTACT ME.  I can be reached by PM at jknjb on Nexus.

===================================
OK, SO WHAT DOES IT ACTUALLY DO?
===================================

This mod changes the effects of some of the vanilla archery perks and adds several new ones, including three new mastery level perks.  It also removes some vanilla perks from the perk tree - don't worry, they haven't been deleted, just disabled.  If you have an NPC with those perks, your game won't implode, the perks just won't do anything.

The idea is to make the archery perks a bit more versatile for different play styles, including making it possible to play a pure archer character.

I also wanted to make archery a bit more difficult at lower skill levels, but really make it shine at the mastery level. SO:

This mod also adds MOVEMENT PENALTIES TO PERKS.

- DAMAGE PENALTY: Once you've taken the first rank of OVERDRAW, shots will do 20% LESS DAMAGE IF YOU'RE MOVING WHEN YOU SHOOT.  For example, if all you have is the first rank of OVERDRAW, and you shoot while you're moving, you won't see any increase in damage done, it's like you didn't take the perk.  If you're stationary when you shoot, you get the benefit of the perk.  In short, if you're moving when you shoot, it's like having one LESS rank of the OVERDRAW perk.

- PERK APPLICATION PENALTY: For perks that affect other damage- and aiming-related skills, like POWER SHOT and STEADY HAND, the benefits of the perk WON'T APPLY IF YOU'RE MOVING.  The idea is that these are skills that require focus, and you can't focus if you're bobbing and weaving and jumping around.

But don't despair.  One of the new mastery perks, DEADLY FOCUS, cancels out these penalties in the regular version, and cuts them in half in the HARDCORE version.  (SEE BELOW)

There are NO changes to
- bows, crossbows or arrows
- gameplay settings
- NPCs

so this should play along with any other mod that doesn't change the archery perks or archery perk tree.  However, depending on what other mods you use, you could find archery becomes stupidly overpowered or stupidly nerfed.  That's life.

=============================
THE IMPORTANT STUFF: PERKS
=============================

ARCHER BRANCH: There are basic archery combat skills.

OVERDRAW (00, 20, 40, 60, 80)
- Same as vanilla, except...
- ...if you're moving, you'll do 20% less damage.  In other words, if you're moving when you shoot, it's like having one less rank of OVERDRAW.

HUNTER'S DISCIPLINE (20)
- Same as vanilla, except the perk is available at 20 skill.
- Requires OVERDRAW00.

PARRY (30)
- NEW.
- Deflect melee blows, reducing damage taken by 10% for a regular bow and 15% for a crossbow.
- Stacks with BLOCK tree perks.
- Requires HUNTER'S DISCIPLINE.

BASH (40)
- NEW.
- Do 10% extra damage bashing with a bow and 15% extra damage bashing with a crossbow.
- Stacks with BLOCK tree perks.
- Requires PARRY.

DISARM (100)
- NEW.
- 25% chance of disarming your opponent when you bash with a bow or crossbow.
- Stacks with BLOCK tree perks.
- Requires BASH.

HUNTER/SNIPER BRANCH:  These perks can up arrow damage quite a lot, but they require focus and concentration.  IF YOU'RE MOVING AROUND, you're not focusing or concentrating....Don't worry, there's a perk for that later on.  (See DEADLY FOCUS, in the ARTILLERY branch, below)

EAGLE EYE (30)
- Same as vanilla, unless you take ENDURANCE (see BELOW), then the stamina drain is only 30% of vanilla.
- Requires OVERDRAW00.

STEADY HAND (40)
- Same as vanilla (STEADYHAND40 vanilla perk), except now there's only one rank.
- Requires EAGLE EYE.

POWER SHOT (50)
- MODIFIED VANILLA (POWERSHOT vanilla perk). The skill required is lower and the perk applies 75% of the time instead of 50% of the time.  BUT...
- ...you MUST BE STATIONARY or the perk's buffs won't get applied to your shot.
- Requires STEADY HAND.

PICK YOUR TARGET (60)
- NEW.
- Ignores 25% of the target's armor.
- STACKS WITH CROSSBOW ARMOR BONUSES.
- YOU MUST BE STATIONARY or the perk's buffs won't get applied to your shot.
- Requires POWER SHOT.

CRITICAL SHOT (70)
- MODIFIED VANILLA (CRITICALSHOT60 vanilla perk) and now there's only one rank.
- 25% chance of critical damage.
- YOU MUST BE STATIONARY or the perk's buffs won't get applied to your shot.
- Requires PICK YOUR TARGET.

ENDURANCE (90)
- NEW.
- Reduces stamina drain of EAGLE EYE to 30% of vanilla.
- Requires CRITICAL SHOT.

DEADLY SHOT (100)
- NEW.
- 50% chance of doing critical damage.
- Does NOT stack with CRITICAL SHOT.
- YOU MUST BE STATIONARY or the perk's buffs won't get applied to your shot.
- Requires ENDURANCE.

ARTILLERY BRANCH:  These are the perks that let you move and fire a lot of arrows quickly, but the damage per arrow isn't necessarily all that high unless you're using other Archery skill perks as well.

RANGER (30)
- Same as vanilla except lower skill requirement.
- Requires OVERDRAW00.

QUICK SHOT (50)
- MODIFIED VANILLA.  Modifies the vanilla perk QUICKSHOT
- 30% faster draw for bows and 15% faster draw for crossbows and lower skill requirement than vanilla.
- Requires RANGER.

DEADLY FOCUS (100)
- NEW.
- You have mastered targeting while moving.  REMOVES ALL MOVEMENT PENALTIES (damage, perk usage) TO ARCHERY PERKS.  Whee!
- Requires QUICK SHOT.

CHANGE LOG:
=============

Version 1.0 - Initial Release!

Version 1.0 HARDCORE - Taking the DEADLY FOCUS perk only cuts the movement penalties in half rather than removing them.

===============
INSTALLATION:
===============

Because this is a substantial change to the archery perks, I recommend playing with it in a test game for a while and see if you like it before committing it to a character you care about.  That way you don't have to uninstall it from your prized level 5000 character and risk screwing up your game.

INSTALL ONLY VERSION - REGULAR OR HARDCORE.

INSTALLING IN A NEW GAME:

1) Install with the mod manager of your choice, or manually drop the ESP into your data folder.  There are no scripts or anything like that, just an ESP.

2) Make sure it loads AFTER any other mods that alter the vanilla archery perks and/or archery perk tree.

INSTALLING IN AN EXISTING GAME:

1) MAKE A HARD SAVE AND PUT IT SOMEPLACE SAFE.

2) Use the mod manager of your choice or drop the esp in your Data folder.

3) Make sure it's AFTER any other mod that changes the vanilla archery perks and/or the archery perk tree or you won't get the changes.

4) IF YOU'VE TAKEN ARCHERY PERKS, YOU WILL LOSE ANY OF THE ONES THAT THIS MOD DISABLES.  YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.

You DID make a hard save first, just in case, RIGHT?

==========
UPDATING:
==========

You SHOULD be able to update by making a hard save, removing the old version and installing the new one.

KEEP THE HARD SAVE IN CASE SOMETHING GOES WRONG so you can revert to it if necessary.

=================
UNINSTALLATION:
=================

1) REVERT TO YOUR HARD SAVE.  REALLY.

No?  Your choice.  I won't support problems that arise from removing the mod mid-game....YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.

It's just an esp, so it should be safe to remove, in that your game won't curl up and die.  However you won't get any perk points you've spent on the new perks back.

Again, play with this mod for a while in a test game and see if you like it before committing it to a character you care about.  That way you don't have to uninstall it from your prized level 5000 character and risk screwing up your game.

=============
LOAD ORDER:
=============

Load it AFTER any other mods that affect vanilla archery perks and/or the perk tree.

===================
COMPATIBLE WITH:
===================

Load it AFTER any other mods that affect vanilla archery perks and/or the perk tree.

Use TESVEdit to check out conflicts in your load order if you're not certain which mods change what things in your game.  I will not be making patches in the event of conflicts, it's too hard to rebalance for every gameplay and combat mod that's out there.  You'll have to choose which mod's effects you want in your game.

As a reminder:

- NPCs who have any of the vanilla perks modified by this mod will have the new perk effects.

- NONE OF THE VANILLA PERKS HAVE BEEN DELETED, JUST DISABLED.  The ones that have been removed from the perk tree are all still there but their effects have been removed from the game.  But I don't know if perk effects get baked into saves.  If anyone does know one way or the other, please let me know.
