Dawnguard is an awful questline, perhaps even worse than the Thieves Guild. Without mods, you're forced to complete it to stop these ridiculous vampire attacks and you're not even allowed to cut it short by offing the wussy Vampire Lord when you first meet him. Your character is also forced to like Serana, no matter how much you (the player) might want to ditch her.
To each there role play but you are aware that you don't need to join the collage to do dawngaurd just ask any carriage dude or just go to dragonbridge and ask any gaurd about it, also for the main questline just go to the outpost and speak directly to septimus.
Really? Wow, how did I never look that up... Thank you for telling me, I think I'm still gonna use Skyrim Unbound, Timing Is Everything and this, though, kinda prefer not playing as a dragonborn by now

Btw, I share your dislike of Dawnguard. But my approach was less "elegant": I made a bat file that would fully complete the entire questline.
EDIT - LOL you don't need to go ANYWHERE near the College to finish Dawnguard...
EDIT #2 - I can totally relate to role playing someone who wouldn't touch the College though xD
There are many valid reasons to hate Dawnguard.
