The differences between the supermarket tomato and heirlooms is the thickness of the skin and taste, looks vary considerably for heirlooms which doesn't effect taste in either direction. Heirlooms are never hybrids, alway open-pollinated. I grow them--this has not been a commercial.
But guys, that's what tomatoes look like when my mom brings them home from the supermarket. Sure, those have been specifically bred to survive mechanical harvesting, but why would it be any different in an medieval agrarian society?
I actually quite like the original tomato in game. It looks far more like what tomatoes looked like before they were bred to be "big and red". Heck it looks like heirloom tomatoes I have bought. A better texture would be great, but I would steer away from making it look like a modern tomato in terms of color and fullness.
check out the new versions! @Manfredlove: tomatos can be harvested when they are still green. So i think lorewise its possible that they come from warmer/others regions with caravans and they still look good when they arrive in skyrim. On the other side, there are regions in skyrim that dont look very cold but at the end, we all know there are no tomato plants ingame. @t1000n1: thats right!
