This is good for some NPC's in the game - for example the war camp generals are essential even after the war, meaning you can never clear the camps. However there is already a mod to fix this.
If you do want to do this then I'm not sure that a .bat file would be the way to go about this - it works, but it's not the cleanest method and as mentioned by gosthy, it's not reversible. I'd suggest learning the Creation Kit and creating a plugin that does all of the above. This way it's also reversible, since I believe the essential tag is attached to the base actor, not the actor instance stored in the save.
Nice collection, but I'm not sure if I'll be using it because it's not reversible. Do you think you could enable downloads with the mod manager? The bat command runs .txt-s from the data folder as well.
A small note to those who have a different load order due to the unofficial patches: You can open the file, press Ctrl+H and replace "setessential 02" with "setessential 03", and "setessential 04" with "setessential 07".
I just thought it was easier to replace some numbers than to reorganize your load order twice. The problem with making NPCs essential again is that some of them stop being essential after certain quests, so it's not completely perfect.
If you remove the essential tag on certain npc, then you will not be able to complete certain quests involving the given npc. Example Maven she is involved with the thieves guild quests so if we killed her, which i would love to, then we would not be able complete certain quests involving her. Useful batch file though but i would be worried of how game breaking this would be.Anyway thanks for the work you put into this.
Of course killing quest npcs would break the game but at least in morrowind the gave you a message telling you that but afterwards... You dont have to do this on your main save it can be a different one just to test it out.
