I've played D&D since I was 17 years old (I'm 54 now). This rule has always seemed like a game mechanic designed primarily for game balance. Since magic doesn't exist in the real world, it's very difficult to compare how it would be used. The no armour rule for mages has never seemed immersive to me.

Yes, magic should be very difficult to obtain and use. Studying spell tombs should take hours, or even days. Researching new spells should take weeks or months, years maybe. Perhaps just using magic should cost some form of 'life force, cause fatigue (a temporary health or stamina decrees). Deciding that armour effects magic use seems too arbitrary for me.

Bravo! I've been looking for something like this for some time. I haven't played DnD, I have a little knowledge of it though. My preferances for magic gameplay mainly come from warhammer 40k. Magic should't only be hard but rare and DANGEROUS. You can't have everyone jumping around shooting aetheric energies out of Oblivion/warp/fade/cosmos just like that

I understand that in skyrim, magic can be a little weak in an Un-modded game. But with some simple mods, it can be balanced. Mods like this which apply restrictions/ penalties ( logical) on mages are definately a thing for me. Thanks!

If you are interested in this whole idea, you can also check http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/58051

It is a little more complicated ( the description at least) and I understand it contains scripts, so, keep backup before testing in case you don't like it!

If anyone has in mind similar mods, or something that makes necromancy forbidden/ persecuted for example, please share your knowledge!

One last thing: can you make a version without the perk changes? Not that I care much for Matching set, I just like the starting penalty more. Or, if it is not too hard, perhaps you can give me some instructions and I'll try it myself. Thanks in advance

Why exactly do you think heavy armor is a bad idea for a mage? It's not like they have to do a funny dance or something to cast a spell.

This dates back to D& (Dungeons & Dragons) where spells had either a somatic or verbal component, or often both. The former would be a gesture, such as a measured and precise movement of the hand. Therefore armor resulted in Arcane Spell Failure, which is a % chance, its magnitude depending on what kind of armor your character is wearing, that your spell will simply fizzle and do nothing. Why? Because you screwed the gesture up.

How this fits into elder scrolls is up to everyones own discretion I'd say.

thank you sir!you are exactly right.and although this mod is an outright nerf to mages wearing armor, a few people will appreciate the gesture towards the games roots of dungeons and dragons. without this there is really no reason at all to wear robes...now there is.

I've also implemented the entire functionality in the lowest impact way possible.
when you wear armor you will see the penalty in the active effects section.the only other reference is the rewording of the 2 (previously worthless) perks.

You don't even have to go that far back. Oblivion penalized mages for wearing gauntlets.

I know in D& it's forbidden for mages to wear any armor but personally I like to picture war wizards or battle mages wearing heavy amor.

I believe the reason why everyone at the college wears robes is simply because robes are a lot more comfortable to wear than pants (or armor) .

by all means you can still do that 'war mage' character.my current char is doing this with heavy armor.

you get the perk and the penalty is only 1/5th increased cost. this implies you have been training to cast even when hindered.

in my wild imagine I reason this by saying the material is interrupting the flow of mana (magicka) and makes the hand gestures more difficult.
