There is a small invisible box in the bear traps that's used to trigger the trap. For some reason if a NPC, the player or items are within that box you can't pick it up (I prevent that because the game would crash otherwise). If you can't pick up a bear trap try to putting it on a table or something, or flip it once or twice, putting it on a flat surface.
You can always pick up traps again. (Well, unless they explode)
I use Hunter Traps: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/12709/?
It not only allows you to pick up and deploy traps, but also to craft them with a variety of materials for better damage. You might consider something similar. Try to find some way to distinguish your mod from other similar mods.
The idea behind this mod is not to add completely new Items, just some kind of immersion... Like "why can you pickup something useless like a fork or a plate, but not useful stuff like traps?" Just a small mod with a small addition
This looks great. I just have a couple of questions.
1. Have you done anything to increase the damage that these will deal out. I find the bear traps are a little weak in the vanilla game at higher levels. Even town guards need to step on them about 4 times to kill them.
2. There was another bear trap mod that had a number of different bear traps but the AOE was tiny. If you did not step exactly in the center of the trap it would not trigger. This mod was abandoned shortly after he posted it, but it did work good when it worked.
Bear Traps in FONV were always a lot of fun for a sneak toon and I have really wanted to use them in Skyrim. However the only other mods I found that would allow them to be used had the issues I stated above. Lack of damage and tiny AOE to trigger the trap.
I did not change anything besides allowing traps to be picked up. Although increasing the damage sounds like a good idea... I'll give it a try (maybe as optional file)
it reminds me of this great mod here http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/9463/?, unfortunely it breaks the game and its very outdated, i suggest you work on different kinds of traps, with interesting effects and aplications, like this mod.

future add poisonable version?
thanks
So, if I understand things right, after the trap caught someone it is full and you can't reuse it. Or is there a way to empty a trap?

Good luck with this mod!
