No not really, you can start the Brotherhood Quest whenever u want. You can make yourself really badass and overpowered before you confront her. There is really no reason she has to be weak for milkdrinkers.
To be honest, you guys forgot a small detail. Now, can someone tell me who's the client for this kill again? There's really no need to make the old hag super powerful because she's really not meant to be. Someone wants her dead and you just managed to take the whack before some sore loser does.
Still, each has their own preference. I like taking a shot from around the corner with my bow.
@mkprovince i think it was Aventis Aventino? cant remember the name entirely, but he is in Windhelm, just look around for a dark elf and a boy talking about someone the boy wants to play with. @GendunDrup schnubbel is right, you DONT have to start the quest as soon as possible, you could wait and do it pratically after you kill Alduin if you really wanted to beat the game THEN join groups.
You know, Bethesda should have made Grelod hit you with a poison or Illusion spell that makes you imagine a long and horrific dungeon with her as a grotesque boss only to have you complete it and break the spell then you kill her.
After you find out that she was using similar poisons on the children which is why they saw her as a monster and the DB wanted these Poisons.
