Here's a better idea for the backstory, methinks. Instead of some odd revenge plot, have it simply be that the Bards are running out of original content, and therefore they wish to travel with the Dragonborn in order to make their own stories. Also, I'd have them be very jack-of-all-trades. As that's what the Bard class is in most games. Or, for the followers that have quests, have them use the skills they give you e.g. Inge uses stealth, Pantea uses magic, and Giraud uses warrior skills. Perhaps the others could use combinations of the three. On another note, add Pantea and Inge.
... but I'd mention it does not fit in with the vanilla story-lines, I mean the only Nord in vanilla who dislikes a bard on vanilla is Jon Battle-Born, he dislikes Mikeal and that is not because he's a bard, He dislikes him due to he's an imperial money minded womanizer who happened to mention Jon's girlfriend (Olfina Grey-Mane) in his book. Jon is right in his opinion as Mikeal would not fit a bard role (an story-telling artist) in sense - a sell-out - musically speaking compared to what bards are about. If you noticed too most Bards are Nords in the game. Nords tend to hang around inns and meade halls drinking and dancing (more like frolicing) to a bards tunes.
Nice idea, ut it would really take off if you animated the Bards to fight with their instruments (bashing with a lute or drum), and then maybe playing a newly written song after the battle (maybe a funny one).
