Why completely to clean stones if it was possible to recolour or change texture of data/textures/landscape/grass/rocksgrass01.dds. All the same that to extract tooth instead of treating caries.
Here is the thing... Those particular rocks are considered to be grass by the game.
A Simple INI edit fixes all the 'floaters'. Try adding these lines in your SkyrimPrefs file: [Grass] b30GrassVS=0 fGrassStartFadeDistance=10000.0000<---don't necessarily need this one fGrassMaxStartFadeDistance=7000.0000 <---don't necessarily need this one fGrassMinStartFadeDistance=0.0000 <---don't necessarily need this one bGrassPointLighting=0 bAllowLoadGrass=0 bAllowCreateGrass=1 bDrawShaderGrass=1
then add this to the Skyrim.ini: [Grass] bAllowLoadGrass=0 bAllowCreateGrass=1 bDrawShaderGrass=1 bGrassPointLighting=0 iMinGrassSize=20<---don't necessarily need this one
and finally I got some replacement meshes and textures for these that may help you as well....links incoming. these go in meshes/landscape/grass https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/105246813/grass.rar

Ive come across these to, noticing them floating around in some areas, I'm not sure if its a vanilla bug or misplacement by mods because I'll often to to some areas and they wont be there, but might be other times. Its very odd. Ive found them inside dwemer towers and floating near waterfalls, but not always.
They are coloured correctly but for some reason do not receive light property and shadows; I tried a lot of things to get them working and am at an impasse for now.
Never seen those rocks before...Anyway, what do you mean by killing off the rocks? I hope not deleting them, as that is generally a bad thing to do. It's better to just move stuff out of sight.

And yes, had I known they were considered grass objects it would have saved me a couple hours of searching. :/
