I noticed something odd with this, after killing, looting, and wearing the armor off of a random thief encounter, then later coming across another thief. When he stopped me demanding my coin, there was a dialogue option asking him if he didn't recognize a fellow thief.
thank u sir. for some reason i can't join the thieves guild. i did the entry quest but when i follow brynolf into the cistern they all act like i'm trespassing and kill me. this will most certainly do for now. [also i internet love u]. thank u good sir
