   No but seriously, how are you missing that? There's a chest at the left side entrance of Riverwood, as shown in the image

   I haven't played skyrim in a while(comp's hard drive died, had to re-download/install everything) but last time I did, the ring was under the bridge on the helgen side of Riverwood.
