It really sounds like an interesting mod to try, when I get bored and do another character I'll definetly try it out

You may want to change the name of "elves ear"... it's actually a plant, right? Just having it named "Ear" is a little confusing, as in English, an ear is just a body part; the plant is probably named "elves ear" because it's shaped like the ear of an elf. Perhaps something like "Leaves", or "Leaf"?

It would be easier for me to make up "common" names for items if I didn't already memorise the alchemical name of each of them. :<

But I figure stuff that exists in reality would be easiest to name. You'd have mushrooms, eggs, flowers, fish, and so on go by their colours or designs.

There are also everyday items that exist in Skyrim, but not in reality, most notably stuff like elves ear and frost mirriam, which are often found in civilian houses and kitchens. No doubt they're used as some kinds of herbs in cooking. I wouldn't change the names of those because I think it should be obvious what they are to the ordinary Skyrim citizen.

The hard part comes when you have to figure out common names for the weird stuff, like ectoplasm. How would you describe a bowl of slimy-looking stuff? What would the ordinary citizen name it? Or how would you differentiate between bone meal and powdered mammoth tusk, which have almost exactly the same white powdered appearance?

I hope that makes sense. So anyway, it's not an entire list, but that should give you a general idea of how I would do it.

Hm okay that would be a nice addition....but i dont think my english is sufficient for that. (i had to look up "speckled", had absolutely no idea what that could mean.) And describing the items according to their appearance, with best possible accuracy, is a pretty hard task for me.

But i still dont get how the better description would help in any way. Because with the current version all kinds of eggs and feathers are already next to each other. With the extra description the mod would get more like vanilla-skyrim imo.

However...if you wanna help me out and give me name-suggestions which i just have to implement into a new optional file, youre always welcome

No, no, I actually meant for it to be exactly like Better Sorting. Like, you'd put the type first, then the characteristic, like "Mushroom - White". Sorry, I didn't phrase it correctly.

But what I mean in general is that I think separation would make it more orderly as well as save time if someone wanted to buy/sell/use ingredients quickly and at a glance, or something.

    @AwkwardPsyche:
While i respect your opinion and am glad that you like the idea of the mod, dont you think that separating by obvious characteristics would rather cause complete disorder in ingredients menu than being helpful?
the white mushroom and the speckled mushroom would be far away from each other (now its a bit like better sorting, you get all mushrooms next to each other. Admittedly, they have different attributes, but they are still very much mushrooms). If you dont know the name yourself (i.e. the game doesnt tell you the name) then you can still think of a name on your own, like you said, by obvious appearance characteristics. Until you find out the real name .

    regarding the book:
BIG THANK YOU for telling me, i didnt know about that book either. Will definitely have a look, making a sequel to an existing book would fit better into the gameworld than creating a new one.

I like the idea, though judging by the screenshots, it looks like it would be more helpful if the ingredients were separated by obvious appearance characteristics, like white mushroom, speckled mushroom, yellow butterfly wing, etc.

Further, I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it yet, but there is already a book that rez194 is describing ingame, though rather limited (sample page image).

The title is "Herbalist's Guide to Skyrim". If you could expand it or put out a "second edition", it would be a useful addon to this mod.

The mod is "functional" in its current state, but it can (and most likely will!) be expanded

However, i cannot make books reveal the names of the items.
But i try to create a book which includes pictures so that YOU know the names of the items.
(im looking forward to a mod that enables the user to rename items, not only after enchanting)
If i get the book done, i might split it up into different chapters to make it an interesting collectible.

Still, thanks for you feedback rez194

It'd be a more complete mod, in my opinion, if you made some survival manuals you could find or purchase in game with pictures of the ingredients and their specific names. Maybe a collection of many volumes, and maybe each volume would simply reveal the names of several types of ingredients or you would have to directly visually reference the manual to know. It's a great idea, just seems incomplete.
