He is the best companion. I also had that issue where he was fleeing from combat and i solved it by opening the console targeting him and typing: setav confidence 3.
I discovered today when I was playing with an all new character that M'aiq was working completely as a follower, where on my main character, he wasn't. I wonder if it only works if you haven't met him yet?
I had the same problem with him fleeing and hiding. Otherwise this is an awesome mod. I did have to take his robes from him for him to put on his armor as well. He didn't change automatically. Worked with UFO too. Dialogue also was in tact.
