Big shields where not made of pure metal. (only Bucklers where made like that.) They where mostly made of wood with metal on the outside. ... and yes, shields are supposed to be big, they where made to protect the body from enemy attacks (including incoming arrows). In my opinion most Skyrim (vanilla) shields are laughably small. The problem is though, we are all way too much brainwashed by video games, made by ppl who have no idea (most of the time) about how things where made in reality. For example, 2 handed Greatswords as they are shown in Skyrim, appear to weight some 50 pounds or more (if you go after the animations), while in reality they did weigth only a tiny fraction of that and should be almost as nimble as a 1 handed sword.
If you don't belive me watch some videos from scholagladiatoria, Skallagrim, Metatron or Shadiversity (all on youtube). They are all excellent sources of information about such things. Cheers!
this mod is amazing. thank you very much. is there any way i could mod it so that it is even smaller? a good shield use should be able to move it to block effectively
I really like this idea and agree that many of the vanilla light armor shields are too big. The heavy armor ones I think are ok, but the light are too big for me to buy into them being a light armor.
The only thing holding me back from using this mod is that it's a replacer and not standalone. I don't want every shield in game changed, just the ones I craft. That and I'd like to see an option to dl just light shields or just hvy shields, as well as a combo pack that has them all. Just a thought. If this ever becomes standalone I'll be back to dl and Endorse.
Wait one second why would you make the shields smaller that would make them less effective at blocking arrows which they don't do very well anyway I think they should be bigger. The concept is interesting though if it was changed to standalone so that you had the original size as well as a smaller buckler version which would weight less and let you move faster...

In vanilla Skyrim, the shields are unbelievably huge! Take the Shield of Ysgramor, for example:
- It's between 2/5 and 1/2 the height of most character models.
- Average adult human height: 170 cm (approx.)
- Approximate shield diameter: 75 cm
- Approximate base area: 4,417.86 cm^2
- Approximate average thickness: 2.5 cm
(That's very, very generous.)
- Approximate volume: 11,044.66 cm^3
- Approximate density of steel: 7.80 g/cm^3
A calculation based on these approximations, which are generously small, tells me that the Shield of Ysgramor is 86 kg or 190 lbs!
You shouldn't even be able to do curls with it, much less fight with it!
