If anyone can't get niftools working, try downloading nifly. It's the only thing that worked for me

I found a very easy way to get it working for Blender 2.7.8c, together with the Blender Nif Plugin 2.6.0.dev4 - Dev Branch - 2018-07-30

Download 2.7.8c Blender (32 bit .exe) + download the latest Nif Plugin 2.6.0.dev4 zip file
    https://download.blender.org/release/Blender2.78/blender-2.78c-windows32.msi
    https://github.com/niftools/blender_nif_plugin/archive/2.6.0.pre-alpha-branch.zip

( don't care about pyffi and python, which all the other tutorials want you to use, simply don't install those two)

After downloading both (links above), install Blender, then open Blender and go to: File-->User Preferences-----> Addon Tab---->Install from File--->Select the Nif Plugin .zip that you donwloaded----> DoubleCLick or hit the "install from File" (Top right corner)----> then choose on the left side of the panel "Community", now the Netimmerse/Gamebryo Addon should show---> check the little field on that addon to enable it, then click "Save User Settings.

Close that User Preferences tab and look under: File ---> Import (and Export) , there you should now be able to select .nif files and indeed it works for me now and with a somewhat "modern" Blender version

    Works perfectly mate.

Thanks for the reply. Could you please post the link for the addon that works perfectly?

The file "blender_nif_plugin-2.6.0.pre-alpha-branch.zip" that I downloaded on 12/25 does not work for me. I have found an addon zip file on a Japanese site that does work so it seems my method of adding is correct. I know now from the point of my top picture that after clicking the "install from file ..." button it should obviously work and it doesn't do a thing.

    Thanks

Have you tried this version of the plugin?
      https://github.com/niftools/blender_nif_plugin/releases/download/2.6.0.dev4.20200322.f7064f9/blender_nif_plugin-2.6.0a0.dev4.zip

Apparently they updated the plugin, so this new link is now the release version.

I can't try it myself but I think this plugin should still work

Just shorten those links a bit and you can see all the releases, there's two pages of them.
      https://github.com/niftools/blender_nif_plugin/releases
Old ones are on second page, but you may not need those old ones anymore, there's many newer ones.
Bit of warning... You still have to use LE formatted files, and cant use in blender 3.x branch, but 2.9, 2.8 seem to work fine for most things.
There's also another importer called pynifly on github, for certain things it works fine & can use SSE version files, but it doesnt do collisions, or animations, or other specialized things.

If a legitimate link of blender niftools 2.60 can't be found, can anyone atleast share the said file? Apparently 0.0.1 - 0.0.5 always end up in an error saying "Partially functional part from 2.49 series still in progress" and I feel like I've wasted my time just to edit a specific animation that bugged me.

And I feel like 2.60 might be the only last option to get it to work.

(EDIT 2) Problem with step 4, change root node's name?

Thanks for the reply versager16. I'm not sure. I have it downloaded for when I get back to this project. Sorry I'm slow to answer. I had to put this aside for a while because of some computer problems.

Okay, thanks. I think that is working. When I expand the Import-Export: Netimmerse/Gamebryo entry it shows a warning "partially functional, port from 2.49 series still in progress". Is that correct? It looks similar to what I installed from the Japanese site (io_scene_nif-004.zip). I now have: "C:\Users\Craig2\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender\2.78\scripts\addons\io_scene_nif" with the download at your link installed.

The Japanese site says you still can't import a nif that has animation.

Thanks a lot for posting this! I've been wanting to modify a certain Skyrim mesh for a couple years now. Your description looks straight forward but doesn't seem to be working for me. The addon link didn't work for me just now but I already had it downloaded previously. I'm assuming the zip file itself is what you want to be the file that you are installing from. Here's what I see: I don't see the Netimmerse/Gamebryo Addon. I've tried both double clicking and clicking the install from file in the upper right corner. After I do either one of those it automatically goes back to the "community" and clicking on that doesn't change anything. I tried the refresh button too. Thanks

Is this still valid??? Everything in it makes no sense to me because I'm new to Skyrim nifs in Blender, only done Oblivion. When I ctrl+delete bslightingshaderproperties, my mesh disappears. Is it supposed to?

And then step 2. It says to make sure the bsdismembermentskininstance matches those of Fallout 3, but only says what it should be for left leg. Is there a list somewhere where I can look up all the other parts?

I can import a Skyrim nif into Blender 2.79 no problem. It's when I try to EXPORT that I get errors, and the only tutorial I've found on exporting requires steps in sections I don't even have LISTED (such as a screenshot of a box titled 'Niftools Object Panel'). I must have imported it wrong to be missing those panels, but this is the only method I've found so far for importing and I'm stumped before I even started. :(

Edit: I also have ZERO experience with Blender 2.79. >.< I used 2.49b for Oblivion, but it's become unusable since I upgraded to Windows 10. The export tutorial I found (beyond Skyrim) specifies 2.7+, so I assume I'm using the right version, however the nif plugin it linked to wouldn't install with my version of Blender. I had to use one from 7-30-2018 instead...

Edit2: Skipped step 2 in hopes that it was already the right name. >.< Also in step 1, I deleted the texture section within bslightingshaderproperties, as I ASSUME I'm not supposed to be deleting bslightingshaderproperties itself. But this time I too got "array too long" when trying to import. The Nif imported before I edited it in NifSkope (it just complained about the textures being invalid) but wouldn't export it. Now, after editing in NifSkope, I can't import at all. :( I do feel this is slightly less detailed than it should be. I'm not an expert at using NifSkope, but I'm not a novice either. But sadly, I can't seem to work this one out ATM.

EDIT: Okay, to anyone having the array too long error USE NIFSKOPE 1.1.0! Can be downloaded in this thread: https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/3900335-need-old-nifskope-version-110-rc4-or-110-rc6/page-3 With that, I was able to make the appropriate changes and import without an error. I was also able to use the Beyond Skyrim tutorial and EXPORT without errors... Unfortunately, the exported nif was 1kb and empty despite me having selected all before exporting, but THIS tutorial seemed to work at least, lol.

What version of NIFSkope is he using? When I try to convert the BSShaderPPLightingProperty, the only thing I can convert to is BSShaderProperty, which is the wrong property! Any help please?
