Can anyone take over this mod and alter it slightly? It seems to work only so long as you aren't playing with a follower framework. I've tried it with AFT, iAFT, UFO, EFF and NFF. It doesn't work to remove the essential tags even when you place it last in load order. If you play without a framework, it seems to work great. However, how can you play without a follower mod? Only one NPC at a time and they don't level up with you. How can that be worthwhile? They become completely useless.

There has to be a way to use NFF or iAFT and remove the essential tag and the forced healing after combat (which doesn't work right with AFT or iAFT) but still have followers that are immersive and useful.

The game is unplayable without it.

Would this mod work for SSE as well? If not, is it possible to port it?

I successfully ported it to SSE. I have no permissions to do so, I just did it locally on my machine, so I would not be willing to post the result anywhere.
But all I needed to do was

      - Install CreationKit for Skyrim SE from Bethesda launcher
      - download this Oldrim mod
      - extract oldrim mod and put it in my Skyrim Special Edition/Data folder(it has ONLY an .esp, nothing else, and that's why this works)
      - run CreationKit.exe
      - checkmark just this .esp, nothing else
      - with checkmarked .esp highlighted, clicked "Set as Active File" button
      - load up this .esp(ignoring all warnings)
      - make no changes, just save the .esp to the same file name (ignoring all warnings)
      - done. That saved it in the Skyrim SE format.

Loaded up a low level character
      Went to Seven Thousand Steps.
Told a lvl 6 Lydia "Go Kill That Frost Troll", while I crouched and stayed away.
Frost Troll mauled Lydia. She took a knee. But she did not heal.
Troll looked around and said "Oh, I'm not angry at anyone else. You're the only one around."
Frost Troll mauled Lydia again. Lydia died.

Works perfectly for me. Many many thanks.

Note that your followers will have a HealRate of 0.00 when this is working.
They'll still drink vanilla potions (Potion of Plentiful Healing, etc) but not crafted potions.
They can be mauled to just flat out dead without even taking a knee if they're hit hard enough.
If they get mauled to *very* low health but don't die outright, they'll take a knee....but they won't heal when they take that knee.
DoT effects like Dragon Breath or Poison is practically guaranteed to finish them off if they' take a knee.

You have to keep them stocked with Potions of Plentiful Healing, or use Healing Hands / Heal Other, or be prepared to say a few words over their corpse.
This is how I always wanted followers to work

If you wanted, you could use something like "setav HealRate 0.02" to give them a trickle of passive regen, so they heal some between fights, or overnight as you camp.

this works with aft but you have to copy a bunch of follower quest stuff over from iAFT to this mod in TES5Edit so you can recruit followers if anyone is having problems

Recently after many hours playing , and after a death of a party member . A remaining member of my followers would say " i have lost a close friend....it will never be the same ".I found this intriguing as its never occurred before .

Hmm... Umm... Should this mod effect the appearance of our follower? My Lydia turned brown with braided hair. Looks like a Breton, lol.

(New confirmation) I have CBBE on my NPCs and this mod turns Lydia's head brown like with some vampire women and the girl at Falkreath Inn.

    Hi Everyone ,
I have had this mod for over a year now and i have to say its great , you will lose a lot of companions as you level up ...and if you use the extended follower framework mod , always remember to teach your followers to learn your skills and teach them your spells .Also give them better armour ....otherwise they will be caught off guard in firefights as they may be weaker than expected , and then you will lose one or more with this mod ( randomly ) . I do recommend 2 other mods with this one .
1.Bury your Dead .. which gives you a grave marker for your lost companions .
2.Skyrim cremation mod . to dispose of the body , before you make a grave stone.

I would have to say i lost about 20 followers over the last year , but these mods made it very memorable .

Is there a way to revert protected back to before it was patched? As in, protected npcs get knocked down and if they get whacked during their bleedout state they die? I never understood why it was 'unintended' as it seemed like a very good compromise between complete unprotected and current protected which is basically invincible unless you friendly fire.

Also does this mod break EFF's options of going default / protected / essential? I guess it's not a big deal if default / protected act the same since you still get essential, but I'm curious if it breaks the mod.
