The big "Better Followers" mod only changes their looks if you use the "Beauty Pack", otherwise it does what your version sets out to do by making the followers more functional. Have you checked to see if both mods will work together or conflict?
In vanilla Skyrim, if you give any of the followers armor and weapons better than their original ones, they will equip them immediately. What my mod does is this : they become already equipped with the best armor and weapons available according to their stats.
How I did this ? Well, I used the Creation Kit to manipulate the followers. For example I found that Derkeethus has default outfit MinerClothes i.e. if you dismiss Derkeethus after equipping him with better armor, go to a different cell other than Darkwater Crossing and then come back to Darkwater Crossing, then he will once again equip MinerClothes. I saw that Derkeethus' skill in Light armor is good. So I made an outfit 001DerkeethusOutfit in the Creation Kit consisting of Dragonscale armor pieces enchanted with Fortify Archery and Fortify Light Armor and made Derkeethus' default outfit to be 001DerkeethusOutfit instead of MinerClothes. I also gave him a better Daedric bow.
So now Derkeethus' default outfit will be the Dragonscale armor(even when he's mining, sounds a bit odd right) unless of course you give him better ones.
I know that the mod you have mentioned makes the followers look great and adds good looking outfits. But it looks a bit odd to me when "supermodel" Annekke Crag-Jumper(according to the mod) looks younger than her daughter Sylgja.
