The Nightingale armor is not the only one that hides the user - the Dwemer armor transforms anyone into a Doric robot, while the Steel Plate armor makes you look, well, like Iron-Man's cosplaying cousin (but I like them both).
I think the Nightingale armor looks pretty cool, but it does sort of take the character out of any character wearing it. It's like you become the suit instead of just wearing it (so to Midhras's question, heck, it could be anybody in there).
The vanilla DB outfits on the other hand just look ridiculous. I use the DB TS Edition, which looks believably badass.
Yeah, the Brotherhood one isn't my favourite either...so I early on got a texture replacer for it and eventually a mesh replacer as well...then it was a bit more usable. This on the other hand looks much better...and it's the base for a favourite of mine: the Black Sacrament Armor.
Yeah I can't stand that "armor". When I tried to play as a female character I felt like cat woman running around. No protection at all, and very curvy...
