I don't trust either of these two- both plotting and scheming but at least we know for sure that Jade has deep hatred for Rathe. With Quin, we can only imagine his true motives- for a friend, he is not! I'm ready to read more!
Now that looks like one bad mix - Jade and Quin :p Nothing good can come of it unless they both kill each other in a fight - preferably while using torches that happen to fall and burn the NM's casket and the rest of the DB to the ground ...
Still between the two of them, much as I dislike Jade at the moment, I hope she survives. Quin is just bonkers. Not that she is any more trustworthy - her letter to Maven indicates she is trying to kill Rathe. Worse she really must hate him even if she isn't the mad wh*%# she pretended to be ... but now I am wondering if maybe she actually is (crazy I mean) - people don't just stand around torturing people to kill time while they wait for their boss to show without being somewhat nuts. Per her letter I was delaying the Listener waiting for your arrival. That means she was torturing him because either A) she really does hate him (you don't tend to torture people you have no or a minor grudge against) or B) She is as crazy as Quin and just enjoys torture.
I re-read that chapter and have to admit I find her very much a mystery. She is vengeance driven I think - her torture strongly suggests that (or she is just crazy like Quin and does it for pleasure or she is a psychopath mercenary who does it coldly because Maven ordered her to) - but if she isn't a prostitute then who is she and why does she hate Rathe so much?
We also know, at least based on the letter, that she works for Maven and that she may have some fondness for Maven as she warns Maven to be careful (why do that to someone you don't care for). In addition she had not planned on getting into the DB but now that she is she sees it as a good thing .... although if all she wants to do is kill Rathe then seems like it would be safer doing it with an arrow than some action inside the DB. She also says "take down" which can mean kill ... but could also mean maybe discrediting him or removing him as the listener.
Lol just way to much to speculate on with no answers.
Oh and I did notice that Rathe had removed the ring in the last chapter - I didn't mention it as I had already gone off on enough tangents about life, death, animals, good and evil :p
I also noticed how he studied the dagger: peered at it curiously. An intricate carving of a bat had been worked into the hilt of the metal. He fingered it absently and turned back to the water.
Writers don't add stuff like that for no reason. Azura uses Winged Twilights for servants and they are bat like but I consider it very unlikely that shadow is working for Azura :p
