(And Clannad - I love Clannad!!! )
Epic rescue!
Great images and very nicely written chapter!
The small Wolfgar has once again proved his mettle once again, I was sure it was Erik and Wolfgar would not let poor Grim like this. Fortunately this fight to turn their advantage, they had no business to anyone and they were lucky that Molag Bal was no longer present, great shots and nice action scene, i love the music so beautiful with this set.
A great proof of courage and loyalty, great work Wolf !
Erik goes from overgrown man-child to all out, full on, big bad ass MAN! No wonder Grim's got a thing for him; swoon!
Battle scenes (and when I say scene I mean both images and your narration) were simply epic (though I do wish you'd stop flinging poor Wolfgar across the room) !
I'm glad grim came up ok but what the heck was that ritual all about? What were they going to do with him? Hopefully all will be answered in the next instalment.
In regards to the ritual, Molag Bal did hint at what it was about in chapter four (will paste it below for reference). I know it wasn't very clear - the problem is the time line. While I have a master plan for all the stories it doesn't cover details - its more a road map (if I was writing a book then I would have outlined the entire book in advance so it all fit perfectly). Consequently I had to fit it in where it made the most sense and fit all the other stories.
So that means it has to come before Grim went to Falkreath and met the Old Wolf Hircine. If I did it after that it was to close to the current time line and wouldn't be much of a flashback - I wanted about 6-12 months to pass before Grim finally joins up with Erik as a partner in adventures. Plus this story of Erik gives the actual reason WHY Grim needs to go to Falkreath.
Grim also vanishes for a few months - his moral dilemma's in regards to the thieves guild as well as running from being Dragonborn - and then training at High Hrothgar. That was important in regards to Eriks reaction to his leaving. In re-read my stories at the time and saw I could fit in this Erik story between the time he left High Horthgar and Falkreath (as one story ended saying he was heading to Whiterun and the old wolfs tale started with him on his way there). Not a perfect fit but good enough.
So I could not let Grim know he was related to Hircine, or Erik, as that would have jarred with the Falkreath story where Grim learned about it. All Erik saw were "two wolves fighting" he doesn't know one is Hircine. Erik has no idea what the "save my grandson" comment means - he might assume it is Fenrirs dad that is helping ... which it is but he doesn't know that is actually Hircine. The "A lesson for you ... brother" might give him pause ... but with all the emotions, action, fighting, he didn't really hear it and what little he did vanished into memory (or perhaps Hircine did a little "forgetting").
Now when the two of them talk it over later Grim will be curious but he still won't know and he may assume it is some nature spirit related to Fenrir. He will ask Fenrir about it the final chapter ... but Fenrir will just say "Go to Falkreath for your answers".
Now as to why this is important to Hircine is because Grim is a back door in. Blood magic is very powerful. He has some small amount of Hircines actual blood and essence, a touch of his spirit. Another Prince could exploit this (aka Molag Bal) so Hircine needs to make him aware of who he is, as well as make sure he is not a weak link - Grim needs to be able to protect himself on the mortal plane because if he doesn't he could be used by other Princes to undermine Hircine - see Hircine is not all that altruistic although he does care for Grim. On the other hand if Grim is seen as weak by Hircine ... well Hircine may think the best option is to remove Grim from the picture. That is not his first choice though and it would also piss off Kynareth and Fenrir ... and whomever Grims mom is :-)
Okay lastly the hint from previous chapter, which I will also cover just a little in the final chapter:
Love doing the flashbacks but they do make it harder to keep everything organized and a bit harder to follow.
