this sounds alot more like the "taxi services" from lotro, rather than wow (lotro only having you ride on a horse on the ground while being fully capable of being attacked by monsters, whereas wow you fly high above the ground safely).
I'm going to answer the question about realtime travel vs. instant travel. Realtime travel is cool, it's immersive, it's fun. Your character gets to ride in luxury and watch the world wiz by. What's not to like? And besides, it's more immersive. Appearing instantly aross the world? What is that? It isn't realistic or immersive and you miss everything along the way, so it isn't fun. When I bought Morrowind, I was under the impression based on some interview with some of the developers that there would be airship travel in real-time and I was excited about it. I was pretty disappointed later to find out that the siltstrider travel thhat made it into the game instead was pretty much just instant travel. I haven't been back to that game for a while. I wonder if someone has a realtime siltstrider mod made for it yet?

the 'speed' variable is inverse, the higher number it is the slower you go, 0 should give you a divide by zero error.
this is because the formula I use to determine your 'step' is
(destination - start) / speed
edit: now that I think about it I should probably make it
(destination - start) / (1/speed)
