Death has penalties. The penalties will be applied to ANY character in ANY game that is loaded after the player dies. The penalties are Attribute drains. By default, they are temporary. But also, by default, their severity increases at every death. The severity, chance, and other aspects of the mod can be configured in the mod\'s INI file.

Updates
=======
0.52, 10 February 2009:
Semi-complete rewrite.
Use this new version from a clean saved-game.
Temporary death penalties are applied as Enchantments rather than directly modifying the player's Attributes.
As Enchantments, these penalties are easier to manage and track.
So stacking bugs from the previous versions have also been fixed.
These penalties cannot be removed by blessings received from altars.
However, these penalties have a lifespan of 4 hours (by default).
Note that the Death penalty notifications were taken from "Death is..." by Rebekah Johnson (http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/death-is-3/).

Forum discussion that explains better what this mod is about

forum poster:Just a question, but... if you die, do you REALLY want to respawn with what killed you, but weaker? Surely that's just asking for murder smile.gif
if this question is for me...

my reply:no. the mod doesn't actually respawn the player.
you have to actually load the game: any game (ideally, not too far back from when you died).
the penalties are applied AFTER the game is loaded.
with the knowledge that you'll be faced with a challenge that kills you, you can direct the player to avoid the death:
e.g. getting more prepared with spells or poisons before the fight. or avoiding the fight completely.
hence, the penalties in exchange for THAT knowledge.

an update i'm working is that the penalties gets reversed to become bonuses before the effect disappears:
the player should be elated for surviving through the challenge that caused their death.

the mod is mainly targetted for immersionists, of course.
but its still not the cup of tea for many of that ilk. wink.gif

oh, it also prevents the player from continually trying a very difficult challenge (e.g. level 2 character v. a giant):
"you can't beat it, so play the game properly: avoid it."

forum poster:...You put forward a good argument, actually, I'm convinced tongue.gif

Details
=======
Player deaths and the number of those deaths are recorded.

When ANY game is loaded, those deaths are applied as penalties to any or all the Player's attributes: Strength, Intelligence, Willpower, Agility, Speed, Encumbrance, Personality, and Luck.

The chance for an attribute to receive a penalty and the severity of that penalty can be configured in the INI file.

The penalties are, by default, temporary. However, hardcore players can set the mod so that they are permanent. There is no way to revert permanent penalties.

Temporary penalties are removed after 4 hours.

By default, deaths from previous game sessions are reset. However, for hardcore players, these can be so that any penalties from previous game sessions are reapplied at the beginning of new sessions.

The best way to reverse permanent penalties is by deactivating the mod and loading a game BEFORE any of the penalties were applied.

The quest script generally runs every five seconds. And is set at a low priority of 0. Like any mods at this low priority, its functions will not execute immediately after loading a game. A general rule (which is recommended for other mods also) is to wait 5 seconds after loading a game before doing anything.

4. Start Oblivion Launcher, click 'Data Files', place a checkmark beside the kuerteeDeathHasPenalties.esp file.

Incompatibility
===============
None know. But below is more information on aspects of the mod's compatibility.

Temporary penalties are applied as Enchantments. These are only removed when the lifespan of the penalties expires.

Permanent penalties are applied with SetActorValue. This directly changes the player's base attribute value. Mods using this function does not conflict with this mod.

NB: No mods, except those that actually intend to cause this type of irreversible damage, should use SetActorValue on the player.

Known Issues or Bugs
====================
None.
