Hmmm - this is frustrating with Vista. Even if I go as far as to change the icon with Regedit the icons stay associated with the program used to open them.
Which for me is either the CS (for esm/esp) or OBMM (for BSA).
Shortcuts remain easy to adjust though. All the rest useless to me until I can find a way to change those programs to give different icons to different files.
To change your icons for file types, you need to go to Tools --> Folder Options then the File Types tab in windows explorer. The rest should be fairly self-explanatory.

I am obliged to point out on behalf of King Monkeyface that Wrye is W-R-Y-E, not W-Y-R-E. Said like "rye", like the bread.
emh.. anyone wanna give me a hint how to change the icons on Esp or ESM or BSA's? so far im only able to change the icons of the sortcuts. (using Vista)
Well, running through my list of other Oblivion utilities results in: TES4 View, TES4Gecko, OCOL, and TweakOblivion. There are most likely more I'm not familiar with.
Having ESPs, ESMs, and BSAs labeled differently makes it dramatically easier to sort through the Data folder. Thank you.

@theoneking: Yes, I used the Oblivion logo from the fankit, and applied various effects in Photoshop. @CoolDog & PAWN: I will add a whole line of color icons on the next update.
