You may have noticed that I've posted an Alpha version of GYR 2017, with a stern warning not to download it. :o)
That's just to avoid people downloading it without knowing what they're letting themselves in for, and then blaming me when their whole day is ruined. :oP I welcome testers with open virtual arms - just PM me so I can be sure your hand is held while testing, to catch and squish bugs quickly and so on.
The state of play is this: The functionality I wanted to add is there and working, BUT the quest is only partially complete. There's a lot of complex writing and fiddling around needed to get a quest working, so it's a slow process. So the unlocking of spell upgrades halts at the point where you learn the ability to detect nearby nirnroot.
The other upgrades will come via the quest, in time. They can be unlocked by console commands as a stopgap if you volunteer as a tester.
I'd also particularly welcome your thoughts on the quest as it is so far. If it turns out that people think it's a totally stupid idea, than I can go back to square one and find a different approach, and save myself the trouble of finishing a lemon. Or if people think it's a literary work of pure genius (unlikely), that would motivate me to get on with scratching my head and writing, to complete it.
If interested, and you're not afraid of the odd glitch that might crop up, go ahead and pm me.
A quick note, not directly about GYR... but in case you're trying to get me on pm.
There is a hurricane bearing down on Ireland at the moment, expected to hit the south west coast around 6AM Irish time, and then move across the whole country during the day.
Never thought I'd be using those two words - hurricane and Ireland - in the same sentence. Unless, of course, that sentence was "Ireland never gets hurricanes" :o)
There is a nationwide RED wind alert, all schools, colleges, creches are closed. Airports/seaports are also expected to be closed. Public transport will probably close too.
This is BIG for us. We've had nothing like it since 1961.
The guy on the telly tonight put it bluntly: " Do NOT be out in this storm. These are dangerous and damaging winds, and they will hit all parts of the country."
So, in a fine example of Irish understatement... I may be unavailable on Monday. :oD
I fully expect there will be power outages and/or no broadband access at some stage.
Frankly, I just hope I still have a roof afterwards.
So... we'll see what happens.
Just be aware you might be pm'ing me in vain for a day or two.
[Edit - Monday night] Ok, storm more or less gone... roof still intact, power restored. I'm back! Progress shall resume...
I've recently got back to playing Oblivion, and I decided that Gather Ye Rosebuds needed some serious TLC and re-balancing.
So I'm currently working on a complete re-write, changing almost everything and making you earn the upgrades.
You know - just to annoy y'all.
Highlights of the shiny new GYR 2017 ================================
The main thing is: There will be just a single spell, which upgrades with new abilities as you use it, and as you complete certain tasks/find certain objects.
For example, as you progress in Sinderion's quest (and some other stuff), it will get progressively better at Finding Nemo... oops, I mean finding Nirnroot. When you find a certain object, you gain the ability to pick up loose ingredients as well as harvest plants. The harvesting range will grow organically (see what I did there?) as you use it more and more. So it's like a pseudo 'skill'. Various implements of destruction will grant bonuses, but with drawbacks - the choice is yours whether to use them.
umm... etc
It will be *configurable* so you can decide: -How 'message-y' it is - drop messages when nothing harvested/picked up/no Nirnroot if you want. -Whether to pop up the container menu at the end to show details, or just dump everything to your inventory straight away. -Other stuff as I think of it (debug mode for example) -Select your preferred method of chasing Nirnroot
Yes, you read that right - there will be multiple ways of hunting Nirnroot now, unlocked as the spell upgrades: 0) Initially ignores Nirnroot - ya gotta earn it! 1) Tells if any nearby 2) Play hotter/colder by casting / moving / casting again - this is the current method. Note: once 'locked on' to a Nirnroot, harvesting is suspended until you find it or move out of range and lose track. 3) Compass direction: "There is a Nirnroot North West of you" 4) Direction and distance: "There is a Nirnroot approximately 35 metres South East of you" 5) Hunting Dog: Spins you around to face directly at the nearest Nirnroot... just start walking, you can't miss it.
As you earn the upgrades from 1 to 5, you can configure GYR to use any lower level method if you prefer. So if you have level 3, you can decide... naah, I prefer to play hotter/colder. If you have level 5 you might think... Ewww! Makes me dizzy... I'll stick with direction and distance, ta very much.
The new version is basically working, but the upgrade quest is still a work in progress, so it will be maybe a couple of weeks before I'm happy to unleash it. If you think you can contribute some killer ideas on that or if you would like to volunteer as a lab rat, please get in touch by PM.
I'm checking out a few more ideas for enhancement as well, I'll let you know about them if they pan out.
Don't you just love that "New spell smell?" Kinda pine-y, with a hint of Spiddal Stick.
BTW - yes, I'm plotting a total rewrite of Speedy Deposit as well, but don't tell 'em. They'll want it tomorrow if they know. Besides, GYR is downloaded about 10 times more often, so it gets dibs on the first pit stop.
Sooo did you survive the hurricane? You sounded pretty hyped about the update, then you said a hurricane was hitting, then nothing, Its been five years so I'm gonna assume you didn't make it, rip. F .
I don't get the "punishment" for using the spells I.E. Stunted Magicka...
Is it configurable?
I've been looking for harvest mods, as I've been using DZ Autoharvest, but it can harvest an entire maps worth of stuff, and completely pauses the game because it's harvesting so much stuff at once, so I thought this would be a good alternative.
Is there any further development with this mod? I love the idea and it sounds really cool, been using the non 2017 version as I am not good with getting a non-crashy game without incomplete mods. But I would be willing to test, bearing in mind I have little to no experience. Thanks
Sorry for the delay, folks... I kinda took a break when I hit a brick wall in the quest, unsure how to proceed. I'll get back to it this week and make a decision one way or the other: either find a nice way to continue with the quest, or cut it short and give the rest of the upgrades some simpler way.
PS: If unstable is your kinda thing, mebbe you'd like to volunteer as a beta tester in about a week? :o) PM me if you're interested.
So I've only played oblivion for a couple of weeks and just lost a character because it started crashing whenever I tried to save (which doesn't have anything to do with your mod afaik, just meant that I'm restarting), and I loved what your mod does. I'm really looking forward to the new version you've described.
